Guest guest
Just curious... Men.... you probably don't want to read this... Before WLS I would have terrible PMS (mostly mood swings). I had several doctor's tell me a lot of it was due to my weight. More hormones in the fat, etc. About a year before WLS my periods started fluctuating. Doctor said this was normal for a 43 year old woman. They continued to fluctuate after my WLS (Feb. 2001). After a year and a half, they stopped completely. I believe that losing the weight thru me into menopause early. I haven't had a period for almost a year now. The thing is.. it's been a piece of cake. I no longer have mood swings and beside's hot flashes (which are usually pretty mild), it hasn't affected me. After just a year, the hot flashes have subsided substantially. I use to have several hot flashes a day and now it's maybe several a week. The doctor said after a year without a period, I can be pretty sure I've stopped ovulating. Is there any one out there that can relate? For those who have gone thru it... my symptoms are getting better... after you stop ovulating, do they continue to get better, or is it possible I can take a turn for the worse? I just can't believe that my menopause was so easy. thanx in advance....
Guest guest
I haven't " gone through it, " but I am going through it. I had one brief period after WLS, and nothing since, except hot flashes, which have been frequent and intense. I took hormones for a while, but decided the risk wasn't worth it, and am toughing out the hot flashes. I'm glad to hear they will subside. I am 56. I always figured I was late going through menopause because of the hormones my fat was producing. --- 365/199/160 Lap RnY, Distal - Dr. s Vanderbilt University Hospital Surgery date June 3, 2002 ----- Original Message ----- > > Before WLS I would have terrible PMS (mostly mood swings). Guest guest
I haven't been through exactly what you are talking about. I did not have a period for 10 months before wls and exactly one month after surgery started again. They were consistent for the next 8 months. Now sometimes I get a period and some times I don't. Sometimes when I do have one, I just have spotting for a few days sometimes I bleed like normal. I keep hoping it's menopause or atleast premenopause. Guest guest
Interesting you should post this, because as of August, it's been a year since my last period, too. I had taken soy isoflavones for the hot flashes, and it worked great. My OB/GYN had given me black cohosh, I tried it for a month, and I had the opposite reaction...hot flashes every few minutes 24/7. I tossed that, and went back to the soy. I almost never have hot flashes since being on the soy, but obviously, YMMV. BTW, I'll be 51 on Sept. 19th. in NJ **************************** > Just curious... Guest guest
I started perimenopause early, in my 30's, and when I had WLS at age 44 I was on the hormone patch due to heavy hot flashing and other symptoms in my 30's. After weight loss and all the recent reports on the risks associated with the patch, I tried to go cold turkey, but the hot flashing was relentless 24/7, no sleep, irritable, just miserable. You'd think that after 7 years of the patch, I would have gone thru menopause and made it out the other side. Nothing doin'. Tried the black cohosh and over the counter soy stuff but to no avail. Back on the patch and HAPPY. I envy those who go thru menopause effortlessly. And the docs are puzzled as to why some do so easily and others have hellish trips like me. Guest guest
I can so relate to this topic. I started menopause two years ago (I'm 49). It was and continues to be effortless. No night sweats, no hot flashes, no irritability, no nothing. Only one period immediately following my surgery. I figure that this is my reward for having to have a period since I was 9... My sister, on the other hand, who is 11 months older than me, has menopause with a vengeance. She suffers from every single side effect known to woman. She also (as I saw someone else mention) takes the soy isoflavones. She wasn't sure they were working. One time she ran out of them and everything came back very quickly. She'll never let the soy run out again. She swears by them. As long as she's on them, the night sweats and hot flashes are held at bay. live each day like it's your last... love like you've never been hurt... Guest guest
I'm 49 and I started the night sweats and hot flashes about 3 years ago and was taking hormone therapy prior to WLS July 5 02. After WLS I didn't takes the hormones and had no night sweats or hot flashes since the surgery. It's been a little over a year now and I had a period in Oct and April and that's it. THE one in April was barely one so I'm suspecting I'm done! Always wondered though why the WLS stopped the hot flashes and night sweats! Guest guest
!!! I'll be 48 on Sept 18th! And as for the menopause, I had a hysty 2 yrs before WLS...nasty night sweats but no problem during the day. I opted for hormone patches in very low dosages. Been doing that since surgery and when the GYN and I tried to lower the dose even more, I couldn't stand it, even with the natural supps that are suppose to help. I tried several. Wasn't getting any sleep and was a very grouchy lady! " I " couldn't stand to be around me, much less anyone else, LOL! Love, Reba BTW, I'll be 51 on Sept. 19th. > > in NJ > ****************************

I started getting irregular about a year before surgery. It has been since surgery that I started the hot flashes, nite sweets. and irritability. They are not horribly intense, but it is something I HATE going through. It if gets any worse, I plan on seeing somebody about the patch. I heard that this can last up to 10 years? kathy ******************************************* The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep. Guest guest
I heard the same thing Kathy but as always it's different for everyone. I used the hormone patch as a few others mentioned and it worked great for me. Not sure why it all stopped after WLS but I'm glad it did! Guest guest
Hi and Reba, I'll be 50 on Sept. 19th. I had a hysterectomy about 6 months before my WLS. I take Premarin once a day. Tried to quit after surgery but was way too grouchy. People at work asked me to PLEASE go back on my medication. B.in Okla. Re: Menopause after WLS > !!! > > I'll be 48 on Sept 18th! Guest guest
, There are two reasons that I will not take Premarin. One is the fact that it is a pill and the other is the way that the med is made. The drug company collects mare urine in a way that is very uncomfortable for the mare (at least that is my understanding). It is not the thought that the med is made from urine (other meds are made in simular ways) it is the way that the horse is treated. Just my opinion for what THAT is worth, LOL! My Mom takes Premarin and will not change cause it works for her. Been on it for years. But, too, she still takes oyster shell calcium even though I have talked until I am blue about the higher lead levels and the fact that it is carbonate. Oh well, we each have to make our own decisions. Happy early birthday!
