Does anybody have Type2 Diabetics? When you had the surgery did you have

complications with healing and what effects has the surgery had on your

diabetics and medicine? I am controlled by oral meds and diet.

Gloria,

I have not had any experience with it, but I was at my support group last night

and was talking with a lady who did. She told me that before surgery she was on

6 pills and took insulin shots. Now she only takes 1 pill and she is about to

come off of that too. She said that she had no problems healing at all and have

lost 140 pounds. I would definitely talk with the surgeon on that, but thought

that person's story might help you. Good luck on the process to get the

surgery. It is long and drawn out but I know it will be worth it in the end.

Glo - I have Type 2 diabetes. My start weight was 257.5. My A1C was

7.4. I was on Avandia (8mg), Amaryl (8mg) and Insulin (10 units).

While in the hospital my blood sugars were very high (250) and had to

have insulin. Within 2 weeks of surgery, I was having extremely low

readings (70's). 4 weeks after surgery I was completely off all meds

(oral and insulin). My readings are usually 110 in the a.m. and 95 in

the p.m. I did this surgery to get off meds and be in " regular size "

clothes. I did have an allergic reaction to the internal stitches which

caused some oozing or a couple of weeks. Other than that, my healing

has been fine. If you have any additional questions, please feel free

to email me.

Dora, there are probably a lot of people here with Diabetes. I was on insulin

and oral meds at the time of surgery. I was off the insulin within 5 days of

the surgery. I had to get a few small doses of insulin in the hospital because

it was hovering around 300. It did seem to take a little while to heal where my

drain was-probably about 5 weeks before it completly closed up, but I did not

have any problems. You do have to extra careful about getting infections when

you have a wound that takes a while to heal. I kept it covered a lot, and used

peroxicide a couple times a day to help keep our infection and to help keep it

dried out.

My sugars started dropping into the 70's in the afternoon about a month after

surgery, and then I would start getting dizzy. My internist has decreased one

of my meds, and that seems to have helped. I'm 9 weeks out, and I'm starting to

get those low numbers again. My internist said just to keep watching the

numbers, and to contact her when I think we may need to adjust my meds, at which

time she will probably decrease something. The goal is to get rid of

everything! :)

I hope that helps. Kelley

It was the endocrinologist treating me for my diabetes who recommended

I get a gastric bypass. She said that for many Type II diabetics (80%

?) the surgery enables them to completely go off insulin and drugs.

In my case, I was more insulin resistant anyone my surgeon had ever

treated, in 25 years of doing weight loss surgery. Immediately after

surgery (within 24 hours) I was taking only one twentieth (ie 1/20 or

5%) of the insulin I was before. (!)

I am 3 months out from my surgery, and I am still taking that much

smaller dosage. Hopefully, as I continue to lose weight, I will be

able to reduce or even eliminate the insulin.

Since you are able to control yours with meds and diet, I would expect

that you would be able to go off the meds completely.

I had type II Diabetes for many years. I was on oral meds and diet also.

After surgery they told me to watch my blood sugar level but take no meds at

all. My blood sugar was a little high for a while but tas come down

drastically as I lost the weight.
