Guest guest
Hi all, I have a question to ask. I've been to a hematologist and he suggested because my Iron is so low, that I get a colonoscopy and an endoscope. Well, while I was in his office he called my bariatric Dr's (I must of been his first RNY patient), and the Dr he got that day said that since I'm just over 2 years out with my RNY, that the Endocope would be fine, that it wouldn't rupture or effect the pouch.... now, I told My Hemo Dr I was still not comfy with what that particular Dr. said and I'm not sure what the heck he is looking for anway. I can see the Colonoscopy, and I'll get that done, after all I will be 42 next Monday and I guess it's time to get one of these done, and I do have Colitis. However, this Hemo Dr. has NOW washed his hands of me because I did NOT get the Endoscope Nor the Colonoscopy and said he doesn't want to be sued later down the road if I have colon cancer! I just had my Iron labs done this week again and I was taking the Liquid Iron for the month and my levels went up from 10.2 to 10.6, still low and he said that it should of been normal by now. Again, I told him OVER and OVER again in his office last month that us RNY patients (NOT ALL) but most of us do get iron deficient with this surgery, and when he talked to the surgeon at the clinic that I had it done at, the Dr told him that this is a first for him, he's not seen levels so low (before mine were in the high 8's and 9's last year) and that this isn't custom of Gastric patients.... I told my Hemo Dr. that this was indeed quite common among us. Well, you know they think they are God half the time and we shouldn't ever question them.... but, this time I am..... I want to know if anyone else on this list has had an Endoscope because you had low iron and what did it involve and is it infact safe, meaning it won't harm our pouches. Thanks for helping me figure out what I really need to know, from those of you who've experienced this. Also, now the Hemo Dr has washed his hands of me on this, saying that I now have to go back to my PCP and get HIM to give me the order for these scopes AND the iron pills/liquid..... which I told him the liquid made me gag, but I took it, I'd like to try a pill that will disolve in my pouch, but I'm not sure what will work.... any suggestions on that will help too.... I mean if I HAD to take the liquid I would the rest of my life, but I'd rather take a little pill and be done with it. I will say I've felt MUCH better taking the Iron in this past month then ever before. I also give myself B-12 shots monthly too. Thanks again, Sheila in Chgo =:-)
Guest guest
Sheila, You have several problems here. First, you are dealing with doctors who don't know how to diagnose and treat people that have had RNY. Might be time to look for new doctors; Chicago's definitely got some who know how to help us. :-) Second, an endoscopy won't hurt you; many of us have had them done by our WLS doctors for diagnostic purposes both pre- and post-op. Whether it will reveal anything germane to the iron issue is another question; my guess is, probably not. Third, OTC liquid iron is very unlikely to help with your anemia situation. You need to be on an Rx-strength iron; many people on this list including myself have had great results with Chromagen Forte. It is a liquid that's encapsulated in a heat-dissolving gel cap. It brought my ferritin from 11 to 61 in 6 weeks! There are a few other ferrous fumerate and ferrous gluconate products out there that have helped people a great deal. Fourth, my personal experience with hematologists is that they are convinced many things, if not everything, are caused by cancer. They deal with a lot of cancer patients so they are always looking for it. But, just like the normal population, it's quite unlikely that you have cancer. I think you need to get some recommendations from folks here of doctors who have been helpful to them after RNY in the Chicago area. One of those docs can get you on an iron program that will build you back up. Anyone who has dealt with a lot of RNY folks will recognize that anemia and pernicious anemia are both pretty common in our population.
