Guest guest
Hi all, Just received my hospital bill yesterday. It's been submitted to United Healthcare so nothing has been paid yet. I still have to get the bill from the doctors, too. Total Charges $26,606 Account Adjustments $19,575.80 Insurance Claims Outstanding $7,030.25 What kind of deal is that! The insurance company, because of its contract with the hospital they get almost a $20,000 break?!?!? If someone out there DOESN " T have insurance I would HIGHLY recommend bargaining with the hospital. If they will give a company that they have to haggle with such a break, surely they could do a severe cash discount to an individual. Guest guest
Hi Connie, Unfortunately, hospitals do not do this for private pay individuals. In this case, the bigger client (insurance companies) pay less than the little guy. And you don't get to negotiate with hospitals or physicians anymore. Congress just passed a revision of the bankruptcy code, so that if you are working, you still have to pay a portion of your medical bills if they cause you to file bankruptcy!! So there is no motivation whatsoever for the hospitals or doctors to negotiate with you. They have you - until you file bankruptcy, and even then, you have to be destitute now before they have to write it off from a priavate pay person. It isn't fair, but it is the way it is written. Guest guest
That's not always the case. It's worth asking, anyhow, of both the hospital and the surgeon. (What can they do that would leave you worse off? Even if they say no, you've lost only your breath in asking.) Each has, in some cases, given patients who have to pay it all, a break.
