Yes, Becky, the waiting has been the worst part so far about all this.

My spacers and brackets get " installed " on the 26th, which is three

weeks from the OMS consult. The archwires and bands and maybe even the

power chains will be in on August 9th. Yes, the waiting is the worst

part, but hopefully when the braces finally are on and when I get used

to all that stuff in my mouth, everything will be fine. My OD says I

will be getting adjustments/new wires every four weeks; I really like

him alot - he's a real sweetie and not bad looking either! (Hey, that

might be the best part about the adjustments: looking into his eyes as

he works in my mouth! Too bad he's married w/ three kids! LOL!) ~~

Diane, I'm so excited for you. Looks like we'll be having our

surgeries at around the same time :)

Diane, Glad to here you'll only have to have the BSSO. I had two

little stitches on the sides of lower jaw. My surgeon said that's

where he tightened the screws! He removed the stitches on Tuesday.

I am finally feeling like I'm returning to the " land of the living " .

I received a unit PRBC's this am. I can't tell you how much better I

feel. My heart was racing on any exertion prior to transfusion.

Hopefully your adjustment to braces won't take too long. The only

time had a major problem was when they banded the back molars. The

onemolar was tipped & gums came up back of tooth. The had to put band

undergum and it got infected. A few days on peridex and it was

better. I'm hoping after this surgery I won't have another 18 mos

like they had originally said.

Dear Shirley,

What surgery did you have done? I have had my braces on for 9 months

now, and last Monday they placed my bands on my back molars! Wow, they

hurt for four days, no lie. I am going to have a BSSO done as soon as

my bottom teeth are ready. I was hoping to have it done in September

or October, but as of Monday he told me it might be not until November

or December. I was ready, but I know it is a slow process! It means

that I will have had my braces on for almost 14 months before surgery.

Hi Marci,

I only had my braces on for a couple of months before they put the

bands on my back molars. Did they ever tell you what those are for?

They didn't tell me. Did your OD give you rubber spacers for about a

week (little cork-shaped pieces of rubber) before they put the metal

bands on? I hated those things. They kept feeling like they were

going to pop out...and then they did. When I'm referring to the metal

bands, I call them beer caps, because that's what they look like :)

It really hurt when they put the metal bands on too. Third set

worked. I got my braces on this past December, and I'm shooting for

surgery early next summer. 20 month long process in all.

Hi, Joanne - I'm getting my bands put in on August 9th on the back

molars. I think they are a way to secure the brackets to the teeth in

the back. According to the info on www.archwired.com ,which is the

website for adults with braces, " Some of your teeth may need brackets

that are attached to metal bands that go all the way around the

tooth. Ususally, the bands are used only on molars. " Then it goes on

to explain: " Why do some teeth need metal bands instead of regular

brackets? If you have a filling that protrudes to the outside of your

tooth, brackets cannot be glued to these fillings. Therefore, a metal

band must be wrapped around the tooth instead. The bracket is

attached to the metal band. " The website I mentioned,

www.archwired.com , is very helpful. They even have a meesage board

for Orthognathic Surgery. ~~~~~~ Diane (soon-to-be-in-braces)---

Hi Marci, I had surgery for sleep apnea, which included LeFort I,

BSSO, genio, and turbinectomies (nose). The time required prior to

banding the back molars depends. I had braces as a teenager (many

years ago) and at that time all the teeth had bands around them. Now

they usually band only the back molars as they used for pulling other

teeth into position. I know my molars all had fillings or crowns on

them (which meant they are bigger than normal teeth). It took about

18 mos. for my teeth to be positioned properly for my jaw surgery.

I've had braces now for 25 mos. as I had health problems that

cancelled my Dec. surgery.

Now I just need to heal and finish the orthodontics.

Dear JoAnne,

Yes, I had the spacers in for a week and a half before they put

the beer brackets on my last molars.
