Guest guest
I posted a couple of weeks ago about shooting pain in my mouth. I had madibular advancement about 2 years ago. I had some x-rays recently for a car accident and i could see on them a screw partially sticking out the bone, and i could also feel it. I saw my surgeon today and he said the screw had to come out as it was knocking a nerve, and while he was in there he should take out the plate as it could get an infection as the whole area has to be opened up. He will have to cut through the outside of my cheek to reach the screw. I then mentioned that I no longer have Hospital insurance. I had it when I first had my surgery which covered the hotel room. The rest of the surgery was covered by medicare (in australia) so i basically didnt pay anything. Medicare will still cover the surgery (all except $150 of the anaesthetic) but since I dont have hospital the hospital will be about $600-1000 - which i dont have. He said that he may be able to do it in the chair, under heavy sedation with alot of local anasthetic, but he's not sure, as i can only be sedated for 3/4hr and hes not sure he can get it all done....but he thinks he can. Has anyone else had this? Did you have to go to hospital, or did it happen in the chair? Also how long is recovery? I play waterpolo and I am going to Hawaii on 5th August- would there be enough recovery time if I got it done in next couple of weeks, or should I wait until after? Thanks for any help jaimi adelaide australia
Guest guest
Hi! I am so glad that you have discovered the source of your pain. At least there is something that can be done about it. My oral surgeon said that if I ever need to have my plates and screws removed, it could be done in his office. Perhaps the same will be true for you. Here's hoping! Guest guest
I am having all metal removed out by choice. I dont want to encounter the kind of issues you mention when I grow older so I might as well get them out now that I am about 7 month post op. You never know, it not natural bone, it's titanium, so it could be interfering with nerves etc. even though surgeons dont want to bother removing them. My surgeon said about 30 minutes in office procedure with sedation, no general anesthesia. He will not call anesthesiologist, he will do himslef. I hope he knows what he is doing, but I will be breathing on my own since it is not general. -- In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " igetdibs2000 " <igetdibs2000@y...> wrote: > Hi! > > I am so glad that you have discovered the source of your pain. Guest guest
I don't think removal of screws and plates increases the chance of relapse, once the bone has healed, although I didn't ask that question. You might also ask your surgeon whether he's ever used the resorbable polymers. I believe they are experimental in the United States, but I know of at least two people who have had them -- one in the UK and one in Canada, and both were satisfied with their results.
