Guest guest
I have gotten one the past two years. No problem. The only reason I have hesitated this year is because of recovering from a hysterectomy. Guest guest
I refuse to get flu shots because they contain the poisonous heavy metal mercury, in the form of Thimersol, a trademarked preservative. Mercury is a known brain toxin, and as the mother of a preschooler, I need to keep every brain cell that I have! Also, anyone with a known allergy to egg whites will have a reaction, potentially severe, to a flu shot. Those are two good reasons to NOT get the shot. Finally, if like last year, supplies run low, the " worried well " should not get shots until people in genuine risk groups have gotten theirs. But you can ask your health care provider for a thimerosol-free flu shot. It was approved a year or two ago. And the flu " spray " vaccine that is inhaled does not have thimerosol. ~~ Lyn G
Guest guest
Thanks Lyn, I didn't know that. I don't exactly appreciate thimerasol either. They used to use it as a preservative in contact lens solutions, but had to quit using it because too many people were " allergic " to it. However, one of the nurses in my PCP's office said that the flu this year is very serious and has landed many people in the hospital. The flu can be serious any year. Last year we all panicked about SARS, but look at the stats: " An average of about 36,000 people per year in the United States die from influenza, and 114,000 per year have to be admitted to the hospital as a result of influenza. " http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/flu/fluinfo.htm " According to the World Health Organization (WHO), during the SARS outbreak of 2003, a total of 8,098 people worldwide became sick with SARS; of these, 774 died. " http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/sars/factsheet.htm I'd say I have a better chance of being one of the 36,000 in the US than one of the 774 worldwide, so *I* will be getting the flu shot. I've known of too many people, healthy and young, who went downhill too quickly to save because of what they thought was a simple case of the flu. ~~ Lyn
