Guest guest
Welcome to the group Mira! I lived in London for 7 years so know how wonderful the NHS can be (and how bad it can be:-)). This group has been really good in helping me get prepared for the surgery without freaking out too much. I'm sure it will do the same for you. It's always nice to know that there are other people going through the same thing as you. Take care, Sara > Hello all, > > My name's Mira and I live in London, England. > > I've been avoiding surgery for a while, but finally, > my teeth have slipped over too far for comfort, so I > go to my first surgeon/orthadontist meeting on 28th > July. Guest guest
Hi Mira! I live in London too... Have had braces for a couple of years, and finally am due to have surgery at the end of August. I don't write here an awful lot, but I find reading other peoples experiences very helpful in knowing what to expect. At first it's scary, but once you learn more about it and talk to orthodontist, surgeon and fellow patients it becomes less frightening, especially as you have time to get used to the idea while waiting for the braces to do their work. I'm actually more excited than scared now! Good luck with your appointments, Suzy x > > Hello all, > > > > My name's Mira and I live in London, England. > > > > I've been avoiding surgery for a while, but finally, > > my teeth have slipped over too far for comfort, so I > > go to my first surgeon/orthadontist meeting on 28th > > July. Guest guest
Mira, Welcome! Forgive my ignorance but ... what is an NHS? Guest guest
The NHS is our famed..ahem...National Health Service. Everyone in Britain receives free treatment on the NHS and we all contribute to it out of our pay packets in the form of a National Insurance contribution. Those of us who are rich can also elect to get private health care too, this is an optional extra. --- miss_redagain2005 <no_reply > wrote: --------------------------------- Mira, Welcome! Guest guest
Welcome to the group, Mira - Sounds like you and I will be going thru all this together. I've had my Orthodontic Consult and work-up, and waiting for the discussion with the Ortho about his treatment plan, which will be in 3 weeks. I made my appointment with my Oral Surgeon for July 18, for my Orthognathic Surgery consult; his receptionist put me on the " cancellation list " , just in case there is an earlier opening so they can get me right in. I had originally hoped to be in braces by mid-July, so we'll see. I'm 47 and I have an underbite. My Ortho says I'll be in braces pre-operatively for twelve months and post-operatively for up to six months. My Surgeon says I will definitely have a BSSO (set back the jaw) and possibly a LeFort I Maxillary Osteotomy.// Again, welcome!! --- Diane (Idaho) > Hello all, > > My name's Mira and I live in London, England. > > I've been avoiding surgery for a while, but finally, > my teeth have slipped over too far for comfort, so I > go to my first surgeon/orthadontist meeting on 28th > July. I have been in braces for 16 months and am hopfully will be ready for surgery, they will let me know today week when i go back. What will you be having done, and whereabouts in the uk are you being treated? boris. > > Hello all, > > > > My name's Mira and I live in London, England. > > > > I've been avoiding surgery for a while, but finally, > > my teeth have slipped over too far for comfort, so I > > go to my first surgeon/orthadontist meeting on 28th > > July. Guest guest
Hi Boris! What is genio? I hope all they will need to do is my lower jaw, but I guess I will find this out at my appointment in July. I am being treated at the Royal Berks Hospital in Reading. I went there some years back, but because my jaw was not *that* badly out of shape, they said I would be OK without surgery, and also, there is no guarantee that AFTER surgery my jaw would be fixed forever, and it might slip again! Roll on a few years and now I *need* the surgery! The only part I am dreading (and this sounds SO shallow) is wearing braces for 2 years I had to wear them as a teen and it just seems so harsh that i must wear them again now! I'm nearly 30 and none of my peers wear braces. I wish they could invent invisible ones! Guest guest
hey Mira, you know its not so bad having braces, i too wore braces for 7 years when i was younger and finding myself with them again (i am now 33) really isn't as bad as i expected. For the first couple of months when going out i really made my eyes up with lots of make-up and didn't bother with lipstick as i it didn't draw attention to my mouth at first (one advantage of being a woman!) but to be honest i was far more aware of the braces then my friends were. Funny thing I have now are my friends questioning if they should have their teeth done as mine are so straight! Really wear them with pride and smile as you would normally, i have found that they are good conversation topics too and men seem intruged!! My partner says they look like little jewels twickling and didn't find them off putting what so ever. It will take you a little while to get used to them as is natural, but just think of the longer term goal and 2 years won't seem so long to get there. Genio is the chin area, i am not exactly sure what they are going to do to my chin as i saw the surgeon 4yrs ago and all was very brief (one of the disadvantages with going NHS, you dont get quite the individual care as with private)but they took me on as a case that had to have it done ....should have had it when i was 17 but it was never offered. Good luck for july and let me know how you get on! > > > Hello all, > > > > > > My name's Mira and I live in London, England. > > > > > > I've been avoiding surgery for a while, but > finally, > > > my teeth have slipped over too far for comfort, so > I > > > go to my first surgeon/orthadontist meeting on > 28th > > > July. Guest guest
Hi Mira Nice to hear from another new person in the UK. I'm in Guildford, being treated at the Royal Surrey County Hospital and nowhere near even getting braces yet. I go to see my orthodontist for the first time next Friday so finally get to know a bit more about this side of the surgery. I'm seeing a fantastic surgeon who makes me feel totally at ease but the doubts are still there, particularly when the appointments roll round so slowly....too much time to think! The NHS is a painfully slow process! I will be having my wisdom teeth out before any orthodontic work can start and am on the NHS waiting list for this hopefully happening later in the summer. I'm doing the orthodontics privately though as the NHS waiting list for this is 18 months! Love to hear how you get on in July. Guest guest
Hi again Mira Just wanted to add that the part I was most dreading too was braces - the surgery seemed the easy part! In fact the reason I never had it done in the UK was that my orthodontist told me I couldn't have ceramic (clear) braces with the surgery and I just couldn't face having metal ones when I already hated my mouth so much. But I came over to the US and even though my resident orthodontists were a little unwilling to use them the chief resident said it was fine and so I just have them on my top front 6 teeth - which is all anyone can see anyway. You can still see them and I am still very self concious about smiling but I do feel a lot better. I suggest pushing your orthodontist for this option - and never be afraid to get a second opinion. The cost thing may be part of it on the NHS as ceramics are more expensive - although really not by much! Anyway, whatever ends up happening believe me you'll get used to it. The first day I had them put on I just came home and and sat alone crying all day! The first week was really horrible - I just felt like I had all this cr*p in my mouth! I couldn't ever see myself getting used to it but just 3 months later and its fine! I am still concious of it, it still makes eating some things difficult/awkward, I still get fed up of them, but overall I really don't care anymore! I'm just so happy to be having this done at long last (i'm 27) - so good luck and let us know how it goes!
