Guest guest
The formation of the precancerous polyps is genetic- autosomal dominant. Diet has a minimal role- Calcium supplements have been known to help. If someone is predisposed to polyps, they can be removed by colonoscopy before they get bad. This is the only way I know of, and I would not suggest SCD as a substitute for regular colonoscopies if someone has this condition, or if they are related to someone with this condition. Taking calcium and a healthy diet can help, but the genes...and the concern... would be there nonetheless. Guest guest
It is the adenomatous polyps that are the genetic ones. There are other kinds but they do not pose the cancer risk that these do. Don't know about cheese. I think the study is done on calcitrate, but that particular supplement contains illegals. If you had one of these, your GI will check you at intervals. Removing them while they are small and benign is the only way I know of dealing with them. This is not related to the cancer risk from IBD, which they believe is due to chronic inflammation, but I have seen some speculation that folate deficiency is a possibility which is one reason why you have to take folate on sulfasalazine. It is also thought that taking regular meds like SSA reduces that risk as well. Wish there were studies on SCD! So as far as I know, the adenomatous polyps and IBD are independent processes. Since colonoscopies are part of IBD follow up, I would expect that would also take care of polyp screening too. All the more reason why we need our doctors, like it or not. Guest guest
At 08:25 AM 6/3/2010, you wrote: Would SCD help with Colon polyps by avoiding the formation of them? I seem to recall reading somewhere that developing polyps may be genetic. If your colon is healthy, you're less likely to get the polyps. Ah, here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/colon-polyps/ds00511/dsection=prevention Of course, on SCD, we do not eat grains, and the " low fat " stuff is thrown in because everything has to be low-fat these days, because that is what is recommended. Being a cheeseoholic, I am quite happy to get my calcium that way! — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
Hi. Could the person (PJ I think) that posted the above topic and their comments on calcium email me off line ? I have a relative who's constantly getting cancerous polyps and many resections. I'd like to recommend something to him. Thanks, CD - 5 yrs.
