Guest guest
I have pain too ... but I did find a cause for mine. Ovarian cyst. I am having a hysterectomy on Sept 16. I am assuming you have had abdominal/pelvic ultra sound and or CTscan? If not please ask your pcp to schedule one. from NJ. Guest guest
I am almost 2 years out and also have abdominal and back pain issues. You didn't mention if you had back problems before WLS, but I know that I did. I developed osteo-arthritis due to my extra weight. I still have back problems because arthritis does not go away once you develop it. The other thing is that you may be experiencing multiple issues that combine to create the symptoms you mention. For example, gall stones can cause excruciating pain in the abdomen that can also radiate to the back. If you have not been checked for gall bladder problems you should because many WLS patients develop gall stones after surgery. I just had my gall bladder out in March and it took several doctors 6 months to diagnose the problem! The other thing you mention is taking narcotics for the pain. I have also done this but can no longer get prescriptions from my family doctor or gastro specialist because narcotics are very constipating. That could be another one of your problems. Constipation can cause terrible abdominal pain. I have ended up in the ER more than once because of constipation that is so bad that x- rays show that I am literally full of poop in the entire colon. This " back-up " can result in awful pain and even throwing up if it gets bad enough. Finally, irritable bowel syndrome (which I also have) can cause abdominal pain. My doctors don't really have an answer on how to treat this other than it is just something I will have to live with. I am seeing a new gastro specialist in September and hope to get a better answer than this! in Washington Lap RNY Sept 2001 Minus 205 pounds 333.5/128 http://www.wworw.com > I've been suffering with severe chronic back and abdominal pain > since my RNY on 4/5/02 that can only be controlled with heavy > narcotics. Guest guest
I can't think of anything off hand that would cause both abdominal and back pain, but I don't have a medical degree. Abdominal pain can be caused by(these are in the September issue of Woman's Day Magazine so again I am not a doctor): a.. Irritable Bowel Syndrome; b.. Celiac disease - ( I looked this up on the web) Also known as gluten intolerance - Symptoms - " mild weakness, bone pain, and aphthous stomatitis to chronic diarrhea, abdominal bloating, and progressive weight loss c.. Pancratic Insufficiency- Severe pancreatic insufficiency occurs in Cystic Fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, and surgeries of the gastrointestinal system in which portions of the stomach or pancreas are removed. Symptoms of pale, foul-smelling, bulky stools that stick to the side of the toilet bowl or are difficult to flush, oil droplets floating in the toilet bowl after bowel movements, and abdominal discomfort, gas, and bloating. People with pancreatic insufficiency may also have bone pain, muscle cramps, night blindness, and easy bruising. d.. Bacterial infection e.. Crohn's Disease f.. Giardia g.. Food allergies My only thoughts about the back pain: - perhaps since you had the surgery and have lost weight you posture has changed. Herniated disk? What does your doctor say is causing all the abdominal / back pain? If he doesn't know he needs to order some diagnostic tests instead of just treating the pain. At the very least you need an MRI or C Scan and some lab work done. If he doesn't then I would find a doctor that will. There is an ossg group called " ossg gone wrong " . You might check it out. To be honest I have been member of these groups for 19 months and have not heard of your problem. I hope you find an answer soon. Wishing you well. Janet M. Breathe! Guest guest
I suffer from extreme back pain (2 herniated disks) and my thighs have been numb since surgery 12/7/01. I had back problems before, but it has gotten worst, I think from loosing weight and having to readjust to that. I found a book called PAIN FREE by Pete Egoscue (sp?) that has exercises that you do for about 1/2 hour a day and it has helped me substantially.
