Guest guest Posted May 17, 2005 Report Share Posted May 17, 2005 I have had braces for 3 to 4 years when I was younger to correct an open bite. My mom decided against surgery to fully correct the teeth. Due to my bite not being correct, over the past 5 years I have had to endure 10 root canals, 3 dental surgeries, and 1 dental extraction. So far I have been in braces for the 2nd time around for 28 months with a surgery scheduled for next month. My dentist feels all of this could of been avoided if my bite was properly corrected earlier. So this best advice I can give is to listen to your OD because they are very experienced when it comes to making the correct decision. > > > hi guys, > > > i have been so busy i barely have time to go on the computer > > > anymore, my family is taking a family trip to israel and my 10 yr > > > old son is going to sleep away camp for the summer for the first > > > time - so i have not had a minute to breath - thank god i am > > feeling > > > better- > > > i have been getting a lot of comments on how i look and i notice > > > people staring at me a lot- i have heard it all - " did you get a > > > nose job " - " you lost so much weight " - " love your chin " - " you > > look > > > so different i did not even recognize you " - " when you talk your > > > upper lip doesn't move it looks funny! Guest guest Posted May 17, 2005 Report Share Posted May 17, 2005 , I sympathize with your situation. when i was just a young teenager, an orthodontist said that i should go and have the surgery done as it should be an action of last resorts. there is a little truth in there, but every situation is unique however similar they may be and only the patient will be the one who can make the best decision. my dentist put braces on me and tried to correct a class 3 malocclusion with braces alone. despite the good intentions, my teeth were left in horrible conditions of stability. 2 years ago, i finally decided to go through with surgery and my new ortho had to correct what the dentist did and then get on with the regular treatment. all in all, the situation was a complicated one but now that i'm on day 5 after surgery, there's no turning back. just make sure you ask every question you may have before going through with anything. .. see ya

& nbsp;

derrick

& gt;From: & quot;georgek042003 & quot; & lt;georgek042003@... & gt;
& gt;Reply-To: orthognathicsurgerysupport
& gt;To: orthognathicsurgerysupport
& gt;Subject: [Orthognathic Surgery Support ] Re: on having children bites diagnosed
& gt;Date: Tue, 17 May 2005 15:34:19 -0000
& gt;
& gt;I have had braces for 3 to 4 years when I was younger to correct an
& gt;open bite. Guest guest Posted May 18, 2005 Report Share Posted May 18, 2005 Hi Sara, I know the feeling. I also started with braces when I was 7 and went through the headgear and gates and who knows what else. This was back in the 70's and I supposedly had the best orthodontist in Manhatten. I don't think they could do much then to correct bad bites, just mainly straighten teeth. I've been told since then that headgear turned out to be basically useless. Notice you don't see kids running around with headgear anymore. I didn't even have brackets. I had bands around each of my teeth that had to be replaced repeatedly. I can still remember the orthodontist using something like a chisel and mallet to get them on. Ouch! Also they didn't really know anything about TMJ then. My jaw started locking around the the age of 7 or 8 but my orthodontist told me I was just faking it so he couldn't work on my braces. I was finally diagnosed with TMJ by my pediatric dentist when I was 15 in 1982. Then he had a hard time finding a specialist to treat me. The first one (also in New York) wanted to treat me with psychological counseling. As if that would get my jaw unlocked! Finally we found one in Hartford that was really good. Given my family history (my mother has the same huge overbite but not the joint problems - however she did have to have all of her teeth crowned by the time she was in her early 20's), I know we have to do something with to avoid the same problems. She may still need some surgery but even my surgeon was confident that much of her overbite can be corrected while she is still young. By doing nothing, she will certainly need surgery. If her overbite is 10 mm now, I hate to see what it will be like at 18. Thanks for your concern. I really don't want her to go through what we did either. > > > hi guys, > > > i have been so busy i barely have time to go on the computer > > > anymore, my family is taking a family trip to israel and my 10 yr > > > old son is going to sleep away camp for the summer for the first > > > time - so i have not had a minute to breath - thank god i am > > feeling > > > better- > > > i have been getting a lot of comments on how i look and i notice > > > people staring at me a lot- i have heard it all - " did you get a > > > nose job " - " you lost so much weight " - " love your chin " - " you > > look > > > so different i did not even recognize you " - " when you talk your > > > upper lip doesn't move it looks funny!
