Guest guest
I have 2 children, 32 and 28. My daughter was almost anorexic in HS as she was terrified of becoming obese like her dad and I. Now she works hard to keep her weight down. My son was very slender in HS and he now carries about 20# too much. I never deprived them of goodies - I learned in nursing school pediatrics that the majority of kids will eat well and balanced meals if allowed their own choices. It appeared to work pretty well in my home however, you just never know. What is the answer? Wish I knew!! Amber/FL Same here. Two daughters, one gains weight very easily, LOVES food, constant battle to get her to slow down her eating. Second daughter is in the 5th % for weight, eats frequently, but slowly and won't eat something " just because it's there " . If you added up what they both ate, it would be darn close to the same amount. Personally I agree with the idea of serving balanced meals, no deprivation, but stress making smart choices. I cannot police the older one forever and I worry that she's going to have the same weight/food issues that her father and I have. If anyone has the answers, please share! I'm also convinced that the lack of exercise that kids get nowadays is going to cause a major obesity epidemic (and all the co-morbidities that go with it) very soon. Unless your kid is in organized sports year-round, kids are not getting outside just " playing " anymore. If they do, it's for a short time. When I was growing up, as soon as we were done with homework, we were outside playing! Softball, kickball, tag, hopscotch, anything. Plus we walked everywhere, including to school. This is probably the only thing that saved me from being MO earlier in life! Anyway, I got on a roll there....sorry! Sharon in Indy
