Hi Austria,

First of all, welcome to the board. There is a wealth of info here,

and the best way to find some of the very things you are wondering

is to go though some of the old posts. A few weeks worth should get

you better on track than you can imagine at this point. There are

discussions of exactly the questions you are having. One thing that

can help people help you is to know what you will be doing with your

surgery. Are you having upper or lower surgery? Do you have an

underbite, an overbite, an open bite, a closed bite, or TMJ, or

sleep apnea or something else? Anything you can share will help

others help you focus your search for info, and to help you word

specific questions to things you will need to be aware of. It is a

great site, and people are really helpful. Good luck with your

research!

Hugs,

Fran

Hey Fran,

Sorry about not being more specific. But the truth

is, I am not exactly sure what is being done to my

Jaw. I beleive that I am having lower jaw

advancement, and my OS is fixing my deviated septum

(septoplasty), but I am not entirely sure if that is

all (or if it is exactly what he is going to do).

Yes, I am very close to my surgery, but my surgeon has

not been the greatest communicator. I will ask him a

question, he will start to answer it, and will walk

out of the room mumbling the rest under his breath.

My OD's have had problems communicating with him too.

For instance, my surgery was supposed to be back in

April. My OS said that was fine with him, and my OD's

said that I was ready. When it was 2 weeks before the

surgery and I had still not heard anything from the

hospital or the OS's office, I called, and the billing

girl said that I wasn't having surgery that day. He

never told me, he never told my OD's. Now, I wasn't

upset about the delay, b/c actually what he wanted

done was something that I had questioned earlier as to

why it hadn't been done. I was just upset about the

lack of communication. He is a great OS...I have

talked to people who have had him do their surgeries

before, and they all said he was great. But, he is

not explaining anything to me.

I guess I am not as nervous about it, b/c I have known

since I was 10 years old and got my braces off for the

first time that I was going to have to have this

surgery (they made my mom sign a waiver saying that

she understood that my jaw would go back to the way it

was, they had just made it possible to go through my

teenaged years without beeing ridiculed - 13mm

overbite - the biggest they had corrected thruogh

braces up to that point). I am just totally

frustrated with the lack of communication. He has not

prepared me for anything after the surgery - ie, what

to expect when I wake up, what to expect 1, 2, 4,

10...days after surgery, what to eat, how to clean my

teeth, any of that.

I have been so focused on the end result - hopefully

no more daily headaches and semi-monthly migranes -

that I haven't thought about the recovery. I did a

lot of research yesterday about it and what I read

gave me mixed feelings. I had not been nervous up

until that point, and now I am getting more nervous,

but the information is also calming me down because I

know what to expect - I know that probably does not

make sense.

I go to my OS on Aug 3 to have my work up done, and my

mother is going w/ me this time (I am 20 years old),

and we are going to sit my doctor down, and make him

give us some answers. Hopefully, I will know more

then. But any help anyone can give me regarding

recovery for either lower jaw advancement or a

sepoplasty, I would be greatful. And, yes I have been

looking through old emails, and they have all been

very helpful.

Okay, now that I have rambled and ranted - thank you

for listening.

Hi Austria,

No problem, it is not considered ranting here! It would be

frustrating to not have adequate information about your upcoming

surgery. I am glad your Mom is going with you to try to get some

specific answers. It would be really helpful to find out if you are

having upper and lower, or just lower and septoplasty. I am having

septoplasty (lower septum only, the upper will be done after this

surgery), but it is part of the maxilla (upper jaw) surgery. It

will really help you better understand your process if you know what

will be done. I am glad you are both doing just that! Let us know

what you find out.
