Guest guest
2 small frozen containers of mango/apple juice smoothies about 3-4am (don't ask why I was up--I blame the cat who was just 'starving') Scrambled eggs, yogurt (half n half dripped) (salt and mixture of spices) Green bean and chicken breast slices tossed in Marilyn's Hurricane Dressing Turkey, Provolone melt with Marilyn's Ranch Dressing mixed with yogurt (smoked paprika) 32 oz. strawberry/cherry smoothie, kind of before and after eating because it's frozen too hard ;-). Have catfish thawing, frozen broccoli and cooked carrots planned for tomorrow night. Will probably toss the vegetables in spicy butter with cayenne/cinnamon inspired from a recipe on 101Cookbooks. Not typical this week though, I've been trying not to eat so much and do more smoothies but I don't think it's working that way. Debbie 41 cd I love these posts! Gives me new ideas! Guest guest
Hi Eileen, This is a very diverse group that came to SCD for many reasons but with one common goal: To do what the doctor's couldn't... heal our guts. Please see my answers below. Misty Kimble CD - no meds SCD - 2 years 5 months. > 1.I have been making yogurt and thought things were fine until this week and now I am wondering if this might be what is hindering him. The first batch I made was with regular whole milk from cows who are not fed hormones not raw milk but better than grocery store milk. I think it was during his eathing of this batch that he had the 2 a day stool over 12 hours. Then I made some with some Lactose free milk and I think he only had one of those because we questioned whether it was legit because of the lack of lactose. would that impact its potency? I could find nothing on internet to answer this for us. The third batch I made was with goat's milk and just today I read that when cooking it, the temp can not go above 185 degrees and I know for sure this did. I think I killed off the good guys when I did this, yes? Just last night I tested these last two yogurts for live bacteria by putting them in a warm environment in a clean dish covered with plastic wrap. I read that if in the morning the plastic is bulging then fermentation is happening thus live cultures. Well, no bulging plastic wrap was seen so I am guessing it is ineffective yogurt. Am I correct on this? Lactose free milk is illegal. The bacteria actually feed on the lactose during the fermentation and fermenting it for 24 hours is what makes it virtually lactose free. From http://breakingtheviciouscycle.info/legal/legal_illegal_d-n.htm This website has a legal/illegal list of foods. www.pecanbread.com also has more information on legal/illegal items. The site says this about lactose free milk: Lactaid Milk - Illegal - The rate of flow of galactose to the liver when one drinks lactose hydrolyzed milk is high. With lactose hydrolyzed milk, you are ingesting the two sugars: glucose and galactose at the same time. Note: Lactaid Milk is Lactose Hydrolyzed Milk I boiled my goat's milk one time and my yogurt came out ok. I accidently boil my cow's milk yogurt all the time and it's ok. Just watch out for yogurt. When I started the diet, I only tolerated a teaspoon at a time and that was after months on the diet. It took a year for me to be able to tolerate the recommended maximum of 3 cups per day. > 2.If cows milk accidentally comes to a boil does that ruin the yogurt? It hasn't for me. > 3.I tested the temp of the finished yogurt before taking it out of the machine and it was between 115 and 120. Is this too hot? That is a little above the maximum temp for yogurt. It probably won't keep as long as yogurt incubated at 105. Though, it's still yogurt just not as potent. Before I got my dimmer switch, that's the temp my yogurt fermented at. > 4.Is there a yogurt maker that is more reliable than others? I bought a dimmer switch for my old yogurt maker at Home Depot and that allowed it to ferment at the correct temp. I recently bought an Excalibur dehydrator. I set the temp to 105 and that's where it stays the entire 24 hours. I love it. It makes perfect yogurt every time no matter how hot or cold my house gets. > 5.Should he even be eating the yogurt yet? He has been very strict about the diet so given that his symptoms have not been as severe as others we have read about and that he has been so conscientious for the past two weeks, is that a long enough time for the kill off. is it time to add the good bacteria with the culture? He will probably go through die off for a long time. The say there's 3 month, 6 months, 9 month, 1 year. I had them all. I think I went through a 2 year die off in January. It takes a long time to kill all the bad bacteria in the guts. I could not tolerate the yogurt that early on in the diet, but everyone is different. You could take him off and see if he does better or worse. > 6.Has anybody here tried the probiotic VSL#3? I have so many positive things about it and yet it sounds like is is conflict with what Elaine G. says about the types of bacteria which should be used to recolonize It is illegal. Not only does it contain illegal strains of bacteria but it has illegal ingredients too. You can check the archives (Go to groups on Yahoo and do a search on VSL and there's a great explanation by Marilyn). I take acidophilus from www.lucyskitchen.com. > 7.How do you know who to believe...I feel like I start down a path thinking this is the answer, only to find a different voice which also makes sense but conflicts with what I just read somewhere else?! You have to chose what you think is the best answer and stick with it. If it doesn't work, you can try something else, but you have to try each thing 100%. Halfing it won't work. One thing that made me choose the SCD is that it does not receive kickbacks or sell any of its own products. It's a whole food diet that focuses on what types of food to eat. Also, my doctor told me that diet had nothing to do with it. Almost 2 ½ years later, I can say, YES diet has a lot to do with IBD. No one can tell you and your son what to do. I did a lot of research and after meds failed for me and I was facing Humira/Remicaid or surgery, I chose to try SCD (for a second time) and it helped. It helped so much more than meds ever did. > 8.I signed up to a part of this group and am receiving the emails but when I tried to respond to one I was told I am not allowed to post to this group. What do I need to do to correct this? I'm sorry, a moderator will have to respond to this.
