Guest guest
Well, I can say you are doing better than me on the water, but your not getting enough protein in more than likely.. I had my surgery on 6-23-04 and i drink 3 protein shakes a day at 20 grams each.. But I have gotten to the point to where i eat mainly soups just because i get frustrated when i am trying to eat solid foods and they get stuck in yiur chest.. Very uncomfortable feeling.. And i refused to eat it purred.. yuck.. so i eat soft foods.. Today i had a little spagetti for lunch it was okay.. Food just isnt an important part of my life anymore since my taste buds arnt the same.. I swear i try to eat something that i use to like and it just dont taste right so i throw it away..I know that i am probably not eating as much as i should, but the protein shakes has alot of nutrients in it, so i think i am doing ok.. amy vemac2001 wrote: Hi! I had my surgery on 7/15. I'm having trouble getting down the water, and I think I might be eating too much. I'm at the point where I'm not sure what I should be concentrating on. For instance, today I've had 24 oz of water, 8 oz of protein. I had cream of wheat (2 tablespoons) and for lunch I had 2 oz of shreded beef and 2 tablespoons of mashed potatoes. I'm always hungry. HELP! Everytime I drink the water my stomach starts cramping. Is this normal? I'm really getting disgusted and depressed, plus I'm still sore. Guest guest
You need to get the doc or his nutritionist to let you know what you can and cannot eat. I was told no beef or pork for 6 months. But since I was told I could eat pureed foods, I am tried pureed meatloaf. I am assuming it is too hard to digest due to the coarseness of the meat, and that pureeing it would be okay. As you are just two weeks out, you should be on puddings, protein shakes, popsicles, maybe a little cream of wheat. I was told 90% of my diet should be protein. You need to get clear with your MD. Guest guest
I have the same problem with water and cramping sometimes when I drink too much too quick. Slow down while drinking water. I had my surgery May 27, 2004. In June, my doc said to try my best to get as close to 64oz. as possible in. Hope this helps! Bethany 281/261/221/150 > Hi! I had my surgery on 7/15. Guest guest
Just go easy on that new pouch of yours and drink all the water you can. The goal for most Nutritionists I have heard of is 64 oz a day but you will have to build up to that. Just try as hard as possible to get all the water you can in because it is VERY easy for you to become dehydrated so early on and you will end up in the hospital. You need to concentrate on protein as well as water. Try protein drinks. They also help curb appetites between meals. If you do not want to spend a bunch of money on one protein drink that you may end up hating try going to vitalady.com and ordering a bunch of samples to try and that way you can choose the ones you like best. We cannot absorb all the protein we need from food unfortunately just like our vitamins. That is why the protein drinks and vitamin supplements are SO important for us from now on. I was told to eat 5-6 small meals/snacks per day and to always do protein first which I always do. If you are cramping from the water try sipping not gulping and also try it at different temperatures. This really helps some people. If you always drink it ice cold try it at room temp. It might make all the difference. You may be hungry all the time if you are drinking right after your meals or with meals. Our pouches are so small and the food gets washed right out if we drink with a meal or just after a meal. Always wait 30 minutes after your meal to drink any water and never drink with your meal. It is a hard concept I know but an important one and you will get used to it. Otherwise be patient with your healing process. You have just had MAJOR surgery and depression is normal at this point. You may be feeling that way for awhile but it will get better and you will find the pain decreasing soon as well. Go easy on yourself and treat that pouch like a new baby. It is very delicate! *hugs* Colleen Lap-RNY 11/03/03 315/195/??? > Hi! I had my surgery on 7/15. I'm having trouble getting down the > water, and I think I might be eating too much. Guest guest
Just give it time Amy. I had difficulty for awhile and my mom was afraid I was going to starve to death! Fat chance:) It took me a couple months to be really comfortable eating without worrying about dumping or choking on certain things. The thing to remember is chew, chew, chew. Thats why my dr tells me to take twenty minutes to eat. I still don't eat enough to take that long but I try to chew things extra good and for awhile I stayed away from breads, chicken, and certain things that were tough for me to eat. Funny how one person can eat chicken no problem or beef no problem and its difficult for someone else to eat the same thing but our bodies are all different. Give yourself time to figure out what works best for you and in the meantime the protein shakes are great! Guest guest
Bridget, Like last night my friend took me to el fenix and he got a platter that was a steak, beans rice and he gave me some of it, but it first stared off with caso and chips, ate maybe 4 of them, then i ate some of the other food but not much.. then it felt like it was stuck in my chest, just a discomforting feeling and then i felt myself getting sick and ended up in the rest room.. it dont hurt when it comes up as a matter of fact i feel better once i am done.. does this mean i ate to much? I didnt eat much but i thought about the chips may have swollen up in my stomach.. i dont know. what do you think? I am basically eating lifton noodle soup it is made with the water, potatoes, protein shakes and chicken soup.... that is what i have been eating.. I just get so frustrated when i eat and food gets stuck or the fact that some foods just dont taste right to me... amy Bridget Northam wrote: Just give it time Amy. Guest guest
Yes, I have had food get stuck, it is the worst feeling to me and the only thing I could do was, throw up alittle and take a tynlenol PM and go right to bed. But that was the only thing that helped me. Tammy Ricci > I have never had food get stuck. Guest guest
If you had to throw it up chances are you ate too much or something that you are not able to handle yet. The trick is to learn when to stop before that happens and it takes awhile to learn how much you can handle at one time. Some foods you can eat more of than others etc. so it is all a learning experience. Steak and rice are two foods I would definately watch out for. I still can't always eat rice and I am 9 months out. Steak is something I could not eat until I was about 7 months post op. I was told if it needs to be cut it should be pencil eraser size bites and to chew and chew and chew. That sometimes did not even help if it was beef. Don't get frustrated! Just stick to the foods you know you can handle for now. Soup is something that may or may not be a good thing though because the liquid in it pushes the solids through the pouch faster and you can end up being hungry soon after a meal. Guest guest
Only every time I try to " eat " . It is just like temporary indigestion for me, no matter how much I chew -to disintegration. I haven't yet thrown up, so I know I do not have blockage, and cheese goes down without a problem. Janet > I have never had food get stuck.
