Surgery causes temporary loss of sensation.

I had surgery (upper and lower) two weeks ago and am still pretty

numb. My cheeks and chin are the worst. My lips and the inside of my

mouth are also numb. Kind of like when you have a cavity filled

except it does not go away for a few months. For some it takes

longer. Just depends on how well you heal.

Miramanga:

Your doctor will give you the scoop on this in your case. But, mine

indicated that many people have some numbness, it takes a long time to

resolve itself and a very, very few do not get feeling back.

My surgery was for lower only and involved a lot of trauma to my

mandible. The nerve bundles for your chin and lower lips follow the

jaw line and are very likely to be traumatized (bruised) by the

procedure. Nerves take a long time to regenerate feeling.

POst-op, I had some feeling of hot and cold on my left lip but

otherwise was fully numb in a pattern like a goatee. It felt like I

was wearing a rubber chin. It made eating a bit more challenging and

occasionally having to warn your meal-mates that dribbling happens and

that you can't feel it (So, please let me know!!)

After three months, I have almost full feeling on the left side and am

getting more feeling every day in the right. I still find eating

things a little difficult because I can't fully feel when the food is

clearing my lower lip.

There are a couple of good medical web sites on nerve damage which

address this specific issue -- google on " Nerve damage " or " Jaw

surgery " I think. If I remeber later, I'll try to find the site with

diagrams and patient testamonials.

My surgery was on May 18th and I am definitely still numb!! I hate

it, I keep drooling because I can't feel my lower lip or chin at all.

The numbness died down a lot in the first week and now it seems to

have slowed down... The left side of my face is still numb, and I

have a little bit of feeling in the right side. I had bone extracted

from my chin and put in my cheeks as well as both jaws re-aligned so

that might make a difference in how long I'll be numb.

My understanding is that during the surgery, nerves are handled -

moved, pulled, whatever - and because of this, numbness results. It

differs for each person - where, how much, how long - but I think

everyone has been numb.

Hope that helps,

Carol

The numbness is a definite problem for me. I am still numb at

almost 3 weeks post-op. The numbness is SLOWLY going away, and as

such is resulting in more pain. I am still numb from the bottom of

my eyes down into my neck area, but only in the middle. I can feel

my cheeks now and almost my lips. It stinks because of the drooling

that occurs....and you don't know until it's on your shirt. :)

Sweetie, I know three weeks doesn't seem like a short time, but

really, it is. If you had a broken leg, or, God forbid, a broken

hip, it wouldn't be fully recovered in three weeks. Neither is a

broken jaw, nor the tissues around it!

Try to take care of yourself, and cultivate patience. Unless your

doc finds something amiss, your body's just healing itself, and it

takes its own sweet time to do so!
