Guest guest
On a recent vacation i happened to stumble upon a lady working on a ferry, and turns out she had surgery from my surgeon too... she had a splint still in with elastics and coudl talk fine... but i dont know her full story bc she said she had surgery in january and this was last week..odd that she would still be splinted...maybe she is a difficult case... rymi48 wrote: I have consulted with 2 os both equally as good one just uses 2 elastics for lower jaw the other use the 2 elastics but also uses the splint for 6 weeks. How cumbersom is the splint? Can you talk ok with it? Cant decide if its better to have a splint or not i certainly want my bite to be good afterwards. Thanks as allways to all ---------------------------------
Guest guest
I'm 11 days post-op, upper/lower surgery. I'm wired shut and have a splint. The splint gets in the way of breathing, of talking and of drinking. But, my understanding is that it's necessary in order for the teeth to stay in their correct position, at least for me. Not having a splint wasn't an option for me. I'm getting used to it and it's not terrible ... but I wouldn't want to have one again, that's for sure! Hope that helps, even a little. Guest guest
I asked my surgeon what the criteria were for him to leave the splint in post-op, and he said " if I have to segment your upper jaw, the splint will remain in post-op, otherwise we just throw it away " . They use the splint to position teeth during the surgery. When I woke up, one of the first things I did was try to figure out if I had a splint or not. I didn't. I did have 2 or 3 elastics, though, holding things in place. It varies from surgeon to surgeon. > > > Im having lower jaw surgery i think in january > Ive read most people have splints 2 orthos i know say its > the best to keep your bite in place with a splint.
