Chron's/Colitis and doing yoga at the same time. Can yoga have bad effects on

people like us.

Yeah - I do lots of yoga - I think it is fantastic for us. If I'm feeling at

all

symptomatic before I go, I always always feel better afterwards.

Exercise in general - unless you are too sick at that point -

is very helpful, IME. For one, you are increasing endorphins

which regulate the immune system and make you feel good

and help vanquish - erase - low levels of pain and achiness.

Are there any specific poses you can think of? I thought the twisting poses were

supposed to be good.

I've been doing yoga for several years (I started before I had my first Crohn's

flare). I love it. I've really gotten back into it lately. There are so many

benefits of yoga I don't see how it could hurt anyone with digestive issues.

There are actually a good bit of moves that specifically aid digestion and I've

found sites for Yoga and IBS/D. Because of a hip injury, it's one of the safest

exercise routines I can do.

I've done it but yoga always hurts my joints like crazy. Most people tell me

I'm wrong and that yoga doesn't do that but that doesn't make any sense to me

since I know what I'm feeling. I did pilates with UC and on the diet though.

It only bothered me if my symptoms were flaring up quite badly, otherwise it's

helped me.

> I've done it but yoga always hurts my joints like crazy.

How long are you talking about and which form?

Because, initially, you can go through a period when you are stretching out

stuff

you haven't manipulated in years, where a lot of toxins are released and it is

very tiring and you can get an achy feeling. For which, I'm sure an epsom

bath would work wonders.

Or are you talking long term - where it can mean - though doesn't necessarily -

that things are hurting because you are opening them up and rearranging your

body a bit, bones an muscles and etc., while getting rid of bad habits and

getting

more balance in your body.

I can't really answer either question. I just did whichever yoga class they

were teaching at the gym :). Recently they created a " yo-lates " class that I'm

sure would have been interesting to check out but we have to pay for those types

of classes. I wasn't doing it for very long but I suspect my problem with it

stems more from long term prednisone use than anything else - I really feel it a

lot more than most of the other people there because the joints are so raw.

It's okay though...I prefer zumba anyway! :D

A man suffering from UC told me he improved tremendously after doing yoga

practiced by Swami Ramdev. Two particular poses he recommended were kapalbhati

and alom vilom (sp?). I was told they were advanced so my daughter did not do

them. I know you can find videos of them on the net. Hope this helps.

Since

I developed Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction I’ve been unable to do yoga, as

95% of the movements aggravate my Sphincter of Oddi within a minute or two (serious

right upper quadrant abdominal pain, followed by severe nausea, followed by a

week of digestive distress). After doing yoga for many years, this was

difficult to accept. But there it is. I walk and do some leg and

back stretching exercises to help with my spinal issues and neuropathies that don’t

involve bending or stressing my upper GI. Recently I started tai chi, and

so far am doing OK in terms of my upper GI remaining calm.

Sometimes

our bodies have other ideas about exercise [sigh].

I am asking about yoga because I started doing it when I got my Chron's/UC and I

increased my hemoglobin levels, which I am sure has a lot to do with yoga. The

problem with me is that every time I do yoga, I feel as if my energy is all

drained, so I was wondering if it has any bad effects on people doing our diet.

I know it is better to do yoga on a hungry stomach. But this makes yoga even

more difficult when all my energy is gone after the exercise.

I started doing yoga every day (well, almost every day) around the same time I started SCD because I had noticed in the past that when I exercised regularly my BMs were better, and this is the one form of exercise I can do regularly now given my family and work constraints. I try to do it first thing in the morning before breakfast but occasionally do it later in the day. I haven't noticed any bad effects (if anything I usually feel energized afterwards), but the exercise also doesn't seem to be having the positive effect on digestion it had in the past! I do know that sometimes after doing yoga I feel profoundly *sad*, as if the yoga stretching gets the sadness out of my muscles or something (though this hasn't happened in a while). I don't remember feeling drained though. I'm sorry this isn't helpful. Maybe try a different routine or different poses?

It can be an intense workout - that like other workouts - makes you tired

immediately

afterwards. I was dead for a while after my hour and a half class earlier.

It's pretty

normal though to feel that after exercising. But if you are totally totally

dead you may

need to find an easier class and work up to that earlier level class.

Also, I would make sure I got some protein in at least an hour and a half before

the class. I never heard the hungry thing. It's best to have enough energy

to get through the class.

Does anyone just walk, like hard walking or 3-6 mile walking?  I used to and haven't tried since CD.  Now I feel I could really benefit from it just to keep everything flowing and to stop smoking...I'm not financially motivated to actually try yoga yet.  Just need good shoes for walking.

I use the Sansone walking DVDs a lot.  They vary from 1 to 5 miles.  I can only handle about 1 or 2 miles at the moment.  They use simple low impact moves and strength training, so they are a good all-around workout.

I have yoga DVDs as well, but 10 rounds of sun salutations is not for me.  Doing some yoga -- like 15 minutes or so-- is all I can handle.  I really like the way I feel afterwards, though.  There are a lot of gentle yoga workouts out, including one by Small who has a yoga for MS video.
