Guest guest
Been reading that some of us suffer from UTI's. Please make sure that you do not take Macrobid or Macrodantin (generic Nufurin). University of Chicago says there is a definite link with this drug and pulmonary fibrosis. I have taken this medication my entire life for various UTI's and they think it may have contributed to my PF. Guest guest
Kathy.....they told me Bactrum or Septra (that might be sulfa) but to never ever take Marcobid again. If you do a search you will find all kinds of info about the link to IPF. Scarry since I have taken it since I was in my 20's and now I have IPF. Happy New Year to you too! Guest guest
Mara Not to be the voice of gloom, but thought I’d throw out the possibility that you might be dealing with interstitial cystitis (IC), and not an UTI. It is a common condition for women, per my gynecologist who is also an expert on IC. I’d probably check in with my doctor to have a urinalysis and request a lab culture to verify the presence of the bacterial infection. If nothing turns up, then you can consider whether you might be dealing with IC. The reason I mention it is that things like cranberry juice make IC worse. In fact, all the things you do to help with UTIs make IC worse. Dealing with a yeast infection or gut dysbiosis also makes IC worse. Certain medications make IC worse. Lots of toxins end up in the bladder. I’m speaking form experience on this one [sigh]. So if things don’t get better, than you can look into IC. Kim M. Guest guest
And if it is, in fact, a UTI and you absolutely have to take antibiotics, you will get through it. I just had the same experience last month. Ended up having to take Macrodantin for a week (I was in so much pain and bleeding- cranberry pills weren't going to save me at that point). I ate yogurt 2 hours after every dose or took my probiotic. All in all, I didn't notice too much of a difference in my SCD progress from it. Hope you feel better!!! -Joanna SCD 9/2009, Crohn's 1992, 30mg Prednisone > >>>>>>>>>>>>>> > > What do people do for lower UTIs? Guest guest
So, let me just get some feedback to make sure I'm on the right track with symptoms - since there are a few things it could be. I'm having a lot of burning sensation in the genital area - nothing higher up in the bladder area. I'm actually surprised by how intense the burning feeling is at the moment. Just, seeing as how it is the weekend, the idea of going to the ER is a huge drag, but if it gets any worse, I'm going to go. Because the idea of 48+ hours like this is not pleasant. At the moment, I'm thinking vaginal ice pack. <LOL> Or maybe longterm immersion in cool water. Fortunately there's a seriously underheated pool here, so I may go in in a little bit. Although the idea of bathing suit is not something I'm looking forward to at the moment. I suppose it could also be yeast just from that burning symptom - I looked it up. But am not having other symptoms of yeast. So UTI seems more likely to me. But I don't have any experience with this. So am not 100% definite. Guest guest
Hi Mara, Can you pinpoint where in the genital area it is coming from? The urethral opening? Is it visibly red at all? I still have to ask but do you wax at all? Does it burn more when you urinate? Any fever? Jodi > > > And if it is, in fact, a UTI and you absolutely have to take antibiotics, you will get through it. Guest guest
Mara, You can buy a product in the drug store that tests for urinary tract infections. It's called AZA Test strips. I notice in the package I have there is a sample of a pain reliever for urinary burning. I can't read the ingredients but it says it's for urinary burning. I hope you feel better soon. Guest guest
Mara, A UTI needs to be diagnosed with a urine specimen, but--3 days of Macrodantin are all that are needed to clear up a mild one. If left untreated it can travel to your bladder, which becomes a whole different story and much more serious with more antibiotics. Personally, I wouldn't try to treat it yourself. Also, not to get personal, but if you are having a lot of intercourse, you can get what's called 'honeymoon cystitis"--not actually a UTI, but an irritation of the urethra that mimics a UTI symptoms. Guest guest
Thanks Phyllis, I'm going to look for that. And keep some on hand if this ever happens again. At the moment, the burning feeling seems to have gone down somewhat. Maybe the cranberry kicking in? Mara > Mara, > > You can buy a product in the drug store that tests for urinary tract infections. Guest guest
Be careful though if you take the azo for the pain. It works wonders but the doc cant run a quick culture because of what the stuff does to your urine...it will have to be cultured for 24 hrs...at least thats the way it was about 7 yrs ago!MarlaSent: Saturday, June 19, 2010 6:18 PMTo: BTVC-SCD Subject: Re: Re:Re: UTI Thanks Phyllis, I'm going to look for that. Guest guest
I agree with Terry. I think you can try cranberry and liquids at the first sign of urinary discomfort, but if you have symptoms despite these efforts, you need treatment. AZO will mask the symptoms, but can be useful for pain relief. And yes, at any sign of a UTI, dear hubby is banished to the couch for quite a while.... Guest guest
Hey Debbie! Well, it looks like everyone has absolutely steered you in the right direction. But I felt horrible when I got on today and saw that I missed your message from Saturday! So, just to answer your question in case you are curious or for future problems... When I get bleeding with UTI's I am at the point where if I don't get an antibiotic in me, I feel like I may die! I feel like I have to pee constantly, and when I do it's very painful and not much comes out. It's enough blood that you can see it in the toilet. I will keep bleeding until about 2 doses of antibiotics (4-6 hours)- then the bleeding and pain miraculously clear up! Both my OBGYN and GP have been about to dx it. It's just a simple urine test. Usually they will prescribe the meds before I do the test since they know it's going to turn up positive. Hope that helps and you are over the hump! As the other women have advised, if you can catch it earlier, usually the cranberry pills or AZO and drinking lots of fluids will keep it under control. -Joanna SCD 9/2009, Crohn's 1992, 30mg Prednisone > > Joanna, > > How much bleeding did you have and for how long?
