I would think that if there were no red spots there, then there was still room in that particular area.

great update... and a helmet marking question

Hi everyone,We have GREAT news to share. After 11 weeks in her Hanger helmet, my daughter, Alena, 9 months old, will get her helmet off in the next 1-2 weeks! She started off with a CVA of 12 and is now down to 2 (our goal). Our orthosist gave us the option to either stop it now or continue for another week or two to try to get her down to 0. She's in the middle of a growth spurt right now, so we're hoping that 1-2 more weeks will bring her down to 0. Here's hoping! Now for my question:The orthosist, when we inquired, said that the way to tell if there is still room in the helmet for further growth is to put lipstick on the part of my daughter's head that is "flat," and if the lipstick transfers onto the helmet foam, then her flat spot has rounded out and is pressing against the helmet-- a sign that she is done. Lipstick just seems gross to smear on her sweet little head that we try to protect from foreign chemicals. Anyone know something else we can use to mark her up? Thanks,Mom to Alena, 9 months old11 weeks in Hanger band, Sacramento, CA

Hi thanks for sharing the great news. its good to hear your seeing such good results. I am curious about how/when you determined 2 mm as your "goal" My son is in a Hanger helmet started at 6 mos, and nothing about a goal was mentioned. In fact I rememebr she said we may not get perfect but should get improvement. so I'm still not sure what to expect as far as improvement. he started at 12 mm also and has not been remeasured yet(its been 3 1/2 weeks) so I am wondering how often most people are getting measured??

Stacey...

Congratulations...that is great news! Here's hoping that timely growth spurt takes care of those last 2mm!

We didn't really have a goal either - just the hope that he would get into the normal range of 0-4. We started at 17mm CVA and got down to 5mm after 2 bands. According to CT, because his back left side was so exaggerated, they felt like he was just about as close to perfect as we could get. (We graduated on Friday.) I do remember conversation early on about what we could reasonably expect and what we were after...and they reminded us that the shape of the whole back of his head wasn't normal. We were so honed in on the flatness on the right side, that we didn't give much thought to what was happening on the left. I always described it as really "swinging out" on the back left. Exaggerated fullness. So, the "goal" all along was to get as much new growth as possible to the back right to fill in and balance out that exaggerated fullness on the left. We had the conversation again on Friday at graduation - that both sides won't ever completely match - b/c we can't get the same exaggerated fullness on the right. The left side wasn't ever supposed to look like it looks either, so we can't match it. It always helped me to remind myself of that when I'd do my nightly inspection of his head. Sometimes I'd forget that and start hoping for perfectly restored symmetry. Thankfully, it's not obvious unless his hair is wet and you're looking from the top view. And it's not a huge difference like it was in the beginning. In the first band, CT measured once, I think...about midway through treatment. We had been in band #2 for 3 or 4 weeks when I requested that they measure again and when they did, he hadn't changed at all in CVA - but his other measurements had improved. I was a little discouraged by that, since that's where we really needed to see the improvement - so I didn't ask again for measurements. And they didn't have them scheduled again along the way.
