I

have had elevated liver enzymes several times since developing Sphincter of

Oddi dysfunction (affects biliary tree functioning). The highest levels

existed the first time, and my gastroenterologist discovered a blockage in my

common bile duct that didn’t show up on any of the usual upper GI

scans. He found it because he was doing an ERCP. Whenever I

experience severe biliary tree symptoms my doctor has my liver enzymes checked twice

over a 6-week period, in case I’ll need another ERCP; since the first

time, my liver enzymes lowered without any intervention. My liver

and pancreas enzymes and functions are tested thoroughly twice a year because

of the Sphincter of Oddi malfunctioning, so I keep track of my levels.

Probably

not something you’re dealing with! My immune system rejects every

digestive enzyme I’ve tried, so I’m not taking any. And I’m

not on the medications you are. So not much help to you, I realize.

Elevated

liver enzymes can show up occasionally and then disappear, with no specific

cause discovered. You might be dealing with a temporary biliary tree

slow-down, perhaps gallstones, causing the enzymes to rise. I’d

suspect the digestive enzymes before your medications, however, as that could

be a contributing cause – the dosage you’re using might just be too

high for your liver to process.

Since

I'm getting a colonoscopy on Tuesday and Duke is really bad

about keeping track of all my bloodwork, I just went in today to get

some STAT labs done. Well, apparently my liver enzymes are over 500,

and the normal range is 0-40. It said 'alert' on the printout.

Anyways, I'm guessing it's the azatioprine, but I've also been taking

a lot of digestive enzymes recently. Has anyone had any liver enzyme

elevations related to digestive enzymes? Or azathioprine? I'd like to

know for sure which it is...

Thanks!

Cheers!
