Guest guest
Hi Mia, and welcome to the group! When are you having all this done? Usually we experience numbness when we have these surgical procedures involving the jaws. Most of us do not experience pain, just a kind of discomfort that can be relieved with children's tylenol, although for the first day or so, you will probably be given a stronger painkiller in hospital (I was given demerol, some get morphine, for example). The numbness does go away in time, but can diminish quite slowly after about a month or so, which can be frustrating. Don't be scared. Lots of people have these procedures every week. Most of the discomfort is usually in the first days to a week, then things start to improve as the major swelling goes down. Everyone is different, though. Many of us just sail through this without any problems, others have more difficulty. It's the latter that you'll generally hear more from on these boards. Read around the back posts here, also check out site 2 at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/orthognathicsurgerysite2 and the geocities infowebsite at http://www.geocities.com/orthognathicinfo/ The more info you have for the post-surgery recovery period (and the more questions you can formulate to ask your ortho/surgeon), the better off you'll be when the time comes. Guest guest
its really not as bad as you might think. i had upper and genio about 17 days ago. its pretty much a pain free surgery. i havent taken any pain killers. the worst part for me was about 30 minutes before the surgery! i almost got up and left the hospital.. pretty nervous! but im glad i went through with it. > > My name is Mia. Guest guest
Mia, I had upper jaw surgery and a rhinoplasty at the same time on June 14. I too was scared to death. My surgery took 7 hours but went very well and I am healing on schedule (although it is difficult to be patient as the swelling goes down). There is some pain but they will perscribe pain medication. IF it doesn't work well enough for you, call the sergeon and talk with him/her. My surgery was on a Tuesday and I was completely off pain medication by the following Saturday. There will be a lot of sewllling and numbness. I lucked out and did not get any dark bruises but the swelling is still there and seems to be mostly in my cheeks, nose and upper lip area. Little by little I regain small areas...today I can actually pucker my lips a little. I still cannot raise my lip to show a toothy smile though. When is your surgery? Let me know if I can help with anything else. Steph. > My name is Mia. Hello to all. I am having my upper jaw moved down, > genioplasty, and rhinoplasty all at once. I am scard to death.
