Guest guest
My 19 yo son has been taking the S. Boulardi now for a week. He started it during our vacation week of camping...hmmm. He felt really lousy on day #4 and had more frequent looser stools. He has fluctuated in this regard all week (we are now home),seems to be having more acne, had a couple of mornings of runny nose and has been pretty crabby. Sounds like a fun vacation for him...and us, huh? His diet did not change while we camped so I am assuming that these issues are signs of die off and am wondering how long doe die off last? He really can be quite crabby at times and he is normally my sweetest and most patient child. BTW...trying to take a 19 yo old boy camping while maintaining SCD was a lot of work! I spent even more time in the kitchen than " normal " , trying to bake and prep things to take along. He was running low on food and feeling pretty hungry by the time we got home last night. I am a teacher and have spent the summer cooking for him but am concerned about what life will be like come September when I will not have those 9 hours at home!! I feel overwhelmed and tired already... Eileen mother of 19 yo son with UC no meds; SCD since June
Guest guest
This does sound like die-off, but then, my boys get zits and the grumps too sometimes- so do teen girls- kind of normal for teens.. As to cooking- I spent a lot more time in the kitchen at the beginning of SCD than I do now- it seemed I had to learn how to do so many new things. Now making yogurt and mayo are automatic. I think this will improve with time. I know that having two yogurt makers cuts down on time because I make a lot at one time. The other is to cook and freeze. It may help to invest in an extra inexpensive freezer, and then when you bake for him- do a large amount and freeze in individual servings? I cook a lot of chicken and beef patties at a time and keep them in the freezer, as well as portions of applesauce. I also have teen-young adult boys that are not on SCD and I am constantly cooking in the summer to keep up with their appetites too. Come fall, this job will go to the college cafeteria . My oldest is learning to cook- so this may be a good solution. At 19,your son is preparing to go out on his own- so teaching him to cook SCD may be the best solution for both of you. You could start by having him make his own yogurt (after he practices with you)- after all, if he sticks with SCD, he will have to do this as an adult. I know my boys much prefer when Mom cooks- but it's nice to see them handle this on their own. Hope this helps, PJ > > My 19 yo son has been taking the S. Boulardi now for a week. Guest guest
Eileen S. Boulardii can be potent, triggering plenty of die-off toxins. This might be something he takes less often, and stops it periodically. Most experts say that S. Boulardii should be used for a short period of time, then stopped for a long while. Usually we use bacteria (yogurt, L. Acidophilus supplement) for our more frequent dose of probiotic and save S. Boulardii for the occasional use. At any rate, I’d stop the S. Boulardii for a few days at least, and let his body recover. Kim M.
