Guest guest
Dan~ Your MRI report is a dupe of mine! I found the epidurals to be quite useful. Probably will require more than one. The first couple of days afterwards, it is worse, but then gets a lot better than before. My son has had three back surgeries, and I think he is worse for it. Don't think I'd let them touch me with a knife on my back unless the condition I had was life threatening. Anyway...just so you don't feel alone...our backs are unaware that we haven't died yet...and the discs are turning to powder. humph! Regards~ Jacque : Coincidently I got the results of a recent MRI today for low right back pain that I had always assumed was hip/osteopenia related but lo and behold it just contains myriad sites of bulging, dessication, and you name in all through the lumbar region with narrowing (stenosis of the spina canal) and nerve impingement at more than one site). First thing my good arthritis doc said was " neurosurgeon " and next thing I said was " over my dead body and I will have to be unable to roll off the guerney first. " So the MRI in my case, apparently was an eye opener for things that existed that I had not clue about. Have spent the afternoon doing some reading, etc, and the Dr and I decided to do an epidural as a first step. I decided to do that rather than opt for taking hugh amounts of pain medication and anti-inflamatories to stay mobile. I note your concern about origin of things like this in the Lumbar and can only say that from what I have initially read, weight is one factor among many including age factor which seems to be about right on the money for me. One site was saying that it tended to arise in the 5th decade (which I am shortly about to leave) and the average age was about 58 or 59 when it arose. I will be 59 in November. You might want to consider the MRI as it does provide such detail for the good medicos to base a specific evaluation on. I am glad I had mine, but still trying to soak in the report. Guest guest
> " I eat a whopping load of natural and fake sugars each day with a potential > speck of protein in it. I'm thinking the BB are natural, so not really > sugar, and I believe what it says on the Detour labels because I wasn't here > when there was a flurry of discussion on whether or not the labels are > accurate. " (yep, you missed it. Natural sugar is still sugar--fires off > cravings. The Detour/UTurn & One Way bars are reputed not to be accurately > represented on the labels. More like 16g protein, 20g sugar is one report) > ME: I wanna say, in defense of BBs, that they are one of the lowest, if not THE absolutely lowest, insulin spikers of the fruit kingdom as it pertains to GI (glycemic index). Aside from which, in antioxidant value, you cannot get anything more rich. They are antioxidant powerhouses. If you are going to eat fruit at all (and we ALL should, however moderately or not), eat berries, esp BB's. What pisses me off, and I'm not really surprised to read this, is the possible mislabelling and misrepresentation on the Detour bars as it pertains to their nutritional value, of which they may be not as advertised, but of which they are not quite devoid. Here's something interesting, though: sometimes after this typical lunch of mine, I get sleepy. Not nauseated, not sweaty, not sick to my stomach in any way, just sleepy. Sound like mild dumping perhaps? (Incidentally, I have yet to experience dumping in the " classic sense " , meaning nauseous, sweaty, palpitations, weakness, etc.) > > " Since I started having an all sugar lunch that I thought was healthy, I've > been having the Screaming Mimi Munchies in the evenings and can't see where > I'm going wrong, based on what I think I see. " (yes, poor darling. You are. > You are attending a fire with what you think is a water hose in your hand, > and really pouring gasoline on it and the flames go berserk about 4 hours > later & you are just starting to see a correlation and wondering if you're > nuts or what) ME: Well actually, this night munchies misery has not been evident from the time I started eating this " sugar " lunch (it's more recent), which does not in itself prove or disprove anything. ly, right now I am experiencing some extremely stressful family problems, and I am not so sure what is a biochemical reaction and what is an emotional/psychological reaction. But I think it would be interesting to play around with my diet and see how things improve, if at all. One thing I have become absolutely convinced of, and I am extremely grateful to being made aware of, is that what with my TT coming up on the 8th, it would be prudent and in my own best interest to get in a protein shake or two to boost healing, despite that fact that I find them not a joy to consume tastewise. So I want to say " thanks " , and that I could never be offended by someone who is generous and kind enough to take the time and effort to give me the benefit of their knowledge about something. I truly appreciate it. Lucille
Guest guest
One thing I found for myself: the low-carb bars, which are loaded with sugar alcohols (ultimately carbs that are alleged NOT to affect insulin levels), made me incredibly gassy, VERY uncomfortably so. And as time went on (before I figured out what was pumping up my GI track), I found I became even MORE sensitive to their effects. I found out that sugar alcohols can actually stay in your digestive system for days. This is probably old news to many on this list. The Detour bars supposedly contain 12 grams of sugar alcohols (in the form of the afore-mentioned dreaded glycerine), whereas many of the other brands can have as high as 30 grams per bar. Unfortunatley, the sad reality is that these sugar alcohols are almost impossible to avoid entirely if one wants to have " sugar free " treats from time to time. Recently, on vacation, I had some of that F/F S/F TCBY yogurt, and I would say within about a half hour I was ready to lift off. So, I try to limit the amount of SGs I have each day -- it makes for far less embarrassing contact with the outside world. Thanks for your input Lyn. Guest guest
You know it's funny, cause the literature I've read so far states that weight training increases appetite, whereas cardio is supposed to decrease it. This isn't my personal experience either, . I only started Weight Training recently (Dec 02) and like you, it has had an amazing effect on my wellbeing and physique. While I started WT for it's proven health benefits, it wasn't very long (like maybe 3 months into it) that I saw REMARKABLE changes in my musculature. Of course, I was thrilled. Your routine sounds extremely demanding, and it is smart of you to have supervision. However, I would hate someone who maybe didn't have access, either geographically or economically, to a gym or a PT etc., to forego WT for this reason. Speaking for myself, I loathe gyms and do my workouts at home, including the WT. Not only is there a wealth of info on the web, but a slew of books and tapes which are very helpful for the novice, and this is how I learned my routine (I am still learning.) I would give the proviso to anyone to start out lifting light weights (for females, maybe one lb, or three lbs at most), and concentrate intently on FORM, and not to bump up your weight or your reps until you are certain you are performing each exercise properly. It really isn't too hard, and it's hard to injure oneself if approached in this way. However, I learned this the hard way as my biggest problem in the beginning was not poor form but overtraining -- I am just too alpha for my own good. I didn't injure any muscles, I just exhausted myself and felt quite drained till I stopped pushing so hard and cut back a bit. Even so, while I am doing very well alone at home, I think I will have to bite the bullet at some point and rejoin my local gym (it's actually an excellent one), because I am not entirely satisfied with my lower body routine, and gyms have the equipment advantage for sure. It IS hard work, but the benefits are enormous. Guest guest
As to control: I guess what I really was trying to find out is if there is something I am doing that I shouldn't be doing (what I can control), and I am certainly learning that here. As to fault: my bad if I don't pay attention. Thanks again, . Lucille >>> Do I sound paranoid??? (I can answer this --- YES!) > ********** aren't we all?
