Guest guest
Mara--are those moong beans lentils or mung beans(to make the pancakes)? I also looked up the asofetida, or hing, and I don't think I would use it or even know where to find it. But those pancakes look delish! Guest guest
Mara--are those moong beans lentils or mung beans(to make the pancakes)?it says lentils - moong dal appears to be lentil dal - though what color, I'm not sure. this is at the top of the recipe:There's been much talk of pancakes & Lent across blogs this past week. My mum mentioned some nice savoury pancakes made out of chickpea flour that she ate at a friends house the other day. The very thought appealed to me, & yesterday, when I was out of ideas of what to cook, I thought I'd try my hand at some pancakes, but using soaked lentils instead of flour. Here's another version on another blog which leaves out the filling:http://saffrontrail.blogspot.com/2006/07/4-lentil-pancake-paruppu-adai.htmlI also looked up the asofetida, or hing, and I don't think I would use it or even know where to find it. But those pancakes look delish!yep! and not even hard once you acquire the ingredients. MaraTerryHas anyone ever fermented their lentil pancakes? This recipe calls for rice along with the lentils - but I wonder how it would work if it wereall lentils fermented pancakes? I'd love to have a legal fermented grain back in the diet.Makes my heart go pitter patter and fond just thinking about it:http://www.ivu.org/recipes/indian-beans/red.htmlAnd here is a lentil crepe recipe that looks awesome as is,except it has asefoetida as an optional ingredient and I don't know if that is legal or not:http://www.passionateaboutbaking.com/2009/03/pancakes-lent-lentil-pancakes.htmlit calls for cottage cheese in the filling, but of course justuse DCCC. I'm trying these out very soon. Mara------------------------------------

Guest guest
Just for clarity sake - are moong lentils legal? I've been avoiding it all this time because I thought it was illegal. FYI - all the hing (asofetida) I've found contain some corn products mixed in. Might just be the brands I've seen but better safe than sorry. Normally you use a very very small amount of it anyways in Indian cooking -- so perhaps you won't notice it if its left out. Guest guest
Raj, Perhaps you can clarify for us which kind/color is Moong? I just used red lentils - because that is what I had - and wasn't sure which kind was Moong? Thanks for the tips on the asofetida. Mara > Just for clarity sake - are moong lentils legal? Guest guest
Raj-- thanks for the info re hing. Are moong lentils the same as red or green lentils? If yes, then they are legal. Terry
Guest guest
Moong lentils can be yellow or green. The green ones are with the skin still on. Normally, for the pancakes, the yellow ones are used. I was under the assumption that moong lentils was just split moong beans. And hence illegal according to the list on breakingthevisciouscycle.org But sounds like I may be wrong?? Guest guest
I guess we have to wait for Marilyn to clarify because I know green lentils are legal. Maybe moong beans are a different variety of lentil? Or maybe split lentils are illegal? This is more than I ever knew about lentils - <g>. Mara > > Moong lentils can be yellow or green. You're right -- the recipes look tasty. I think I'd try it with all lentils. But I wouldn't blend the soaking water back in.... that's going to have the starches we don't want in it. I think I'd just skip the asafoetida for the other recipe. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
