Guest guest
I had lower advancement a week ago and was home (well, at my hotel) before noon the same day. As for your friends visiting, I think it will be fine as long as you don't have to expend a lot of energy playing hostess. I am finding, too, that talking a lot seems to make my jaw ache. But it's good for you to have some friendly distractions and to be up and around. My friend dragged me out to restaurants and shopping the day after surgery. I was sore and tired but enjoyed it enough to try on and buy some clothes! Luna

Guest guest
Hi, yes, I have a splint. No, it doesn't really feel claustrophobic, although it's slightly annoying. I'll try to explain it. I think it's similar to a retainer, although I've never had one. Imagine two Jolly Rancher candies (you know? The rectangular hard candies?) melted down on either end of a thick archwire. So the archwire is bare at the front, and has two flattened pieces of acrylic on either side from your incisors to your back molars. The acrylic pieces are about the same width as your teeth and maybe an eighth of an inch thick. They have the imprints of your top teeth on the top and your bottom teeth on the underside. When you wake from surgery, the splint is wired onto your top teeth via the braces. Two doubled-over rubberbands go from your top teeth to your bottom teeth, holding your teeth tightly together in the correct position for your new bite. I was able to take the bands off for eating and hygiene, and my ortho let me switch to single bands after my five-day post-op appointment. I hope that helps. I will try to take some pictures later today or this weekend if I can focus close enough. Luna > > > Hi Luna > > Im having the same surgery as you. Guest guest
The splint is a little awkward but not painful. I could talk surprisingly well, although not great. Try this: Clench your teeth tightly together, then talk. That's what it was like for me. I was expecting worse, so I was happy to be able to speak well enough that people could understand me. I was calling friends on the phone by Day 1. Guest guest
If you're having lower only, you'll probably be up to seeing folks by the fourth day -- if you don't mind having them see you somewhat swollen and bruised. It's not as much so as if you were having upper and lower, but still, I think I'd be inclined to ask them to wait until the next week. Thing is, you'll be awfully tired. Surgery is taxing on the body. And you may be feeling blue, in the aftermath of the anesthesia and/or steroids. (Of course, you may be the sort who would feel better with friends around -- I think a lot just depends on what your attitude is about such things.) I don't think you'll be " ill, " exactly. I just think you'll be tired, and bunged up a bit, perhaps bruised. I also do think that if, when the time comes, you feel different, or have some unpleasant reactions to something, or are in pain, you should have a loophole that they will understand, so that you can feel free to say, " I just really am not up to visiting today. Please come next week when I've recovered more. " On the other hand, you may be up and at 'em! I hope so! Best, Cammie > Hi all. Guest guest
Hi! I had lower advancment plus upper lefort 1 peice. The upper was more trouble than the lower because it affects your nose and sinuses. Everyone is different. I had my parents stay at a hotel with me in the city that I had surgery in (Kelowna, BC). I could talk immediately after surgery for short periods of time. You will likely have low energy and require a lot of rest. However, a short visit, with your friends doing most of the talking, shouldn't be out of the question. Best of luck to you on Monday. You're gonna be absolutely fine Fay 3wks post-op today! > Hi all. Guest guest
Hi Patty! I am sitting here ROFL!! You wrote this: " my Mother-in=law was here last night because of a birthday party, and it didn't seems to matter that I couldn't talk. She just kept going on and on and didn't need my input " . That is priceless! lol I hope you are doing well enough to get the bands off or have some adjustment to help you be more comfortable at your next week appointment. Good luck with this! Guest guest
I had the splint wired in for seven weeks. I was glad to ditch it, but I wouldn't let that be the deciding factor in choosing a surgeon. It's not that big a deal -- although I thought it was, briefly, when I went back at six weeks, having been promised it would come out, and he left it in another week. Of course, I was neither wired shut nor tightly banded. Now THAT would/could be a deciding factor for me, as I think that those who aren't have a much easier recovery. Or at least, I did. (And no, to those of you who are wired or tightly banded, I am NOT second-guessing your surgeons. You may well have different situations/issues than had I. Trust your docs. They're the ones who spent all those costly years in school learning how to take us apart and put us back together!) Guest guest
To recycle an old joke: I'll bet your mother-in-law left the party thinking you're a wonderful conversationalist! Guest guest
I don't think age matters here because I am 23 and banded shut. I was surprised to read that Luna went out to eat and fish the second day. That is something I can only dream about. At day 4, I am feeling a little better than yesterday. My face is still swellen, my ears hurt and I haven't slept for longer than 4 hours continuosly. At times I feel claustrophobic with being wired shut along with the splint in my mouth. Today it was easier to gulp down the liquids. Yesterday and the day before, I threw up twice but felt a lot better after that. I am lucky that I have my family taking care for my every need and encouraging me. Also I took the time out as soon as I felt better enough to read how others on this messageboard are feeling. It really helps to see that I am not the only one going through this experience and finally I am on the other side Namrita. > Luna had a much better experience than I. Guest guest
Namrita and Patty: So, your surgeons won't let you take the bands off at ALL? That sucks. I'm allowed to take mine off for eating and hygiene. I can't imagine not being able to (or being wired). What a drag! L
