Guest guest
Jackie No apple juice is SCD legal. I know Marilyn posts about legal apple cider but I don't know what that is. Yes weak black/green tea is ok. Some celiacs have to be cautious of McCormick seasonings because there is a cross contamination issue. No onion or garlic powders are legal except for Penzy's. There is a letter in the group files. I've done well sticking with single spices like rosemary, oregeno, black pepper, basil, etc. I haven't tried Penzy's yet but they are supposed to be superior to everything out there. There are some ok juices. The Just Juice line from Knudsen is checked out as ok. Welch's 100% grape juice and Tropicana Pure Premium OJ. Watch out for juices though, when undiluted, they can be hard to tolerate. Misty Kimble CD - no meds SCD - Jan 2008 > > I am new to this group and the diet (about 40+ days). Guest guest
Hey Jackie/Misty - just fyi - I have found legal apple (and other) juices at my local stores - fresh pressed apple juice with no added sugars can be found - just might be a little more expensive than regular. I have had elli's (diluted) and never had any problems with it - it is an apple cider with no added sugars. Here is their website www.martinellis.com > > > > I am new to this group and the diet (about 40+ days). Guest guest
what is the consensus on extracts? are they allowed? i'm wondering about things like peppermint or almond extract, but also stevia extract (if these contained only alcohol and the extracted item).and what about powdered stevia (with no other fillers)? thanks, susannah. Guest guest
Stevia is not legal according to Elaine. You can read about it here:http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/stevia.htm I couldn't find Almond Extract on the legal/illegal list, but I did find a few posts referring to using in it recipes. Including some that the moderators commented on and didn't refute the use of Almond Extract. You can read those posts here: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/BTVC-SCD/message/45143http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/BTVC-SCD/message/42497 I'm not sure about the Peppermint Extract, but I do know that peppermint tea is okay. I enjoy it frequently But I don't know how that is made into an Extract and if it's still safe for us after the process. ~ what is the consensus on extracts? are they allowed? i'm wondering about things like peppermint or almond extract, but also stevia extract (if these contained only alcohol and the extracted item). and what about powdered stevia (with no other fillers)? thanks, susannah. Guest guest
Stevia is illegal. So is Xylitol (which I used pre-SCD... couldn't stand the stevia aftertaste) Stevia Illegal It's molecular structure resembles a steroid and the effects are unknown. See, Stevia http://breakingtheviciouscycle.info/legal/legal_illegal_o-s.htm Xylitol Illegal Sorbitol, mannitol, and xylitol are all sugar alcohols and are not SCD™ legal. They fall under the category of indigestible carbs and sugars, and so allow companies to label things 'sugar free', even though they are providing nutrition to the bacteria that live in your digestive tract. I have used Frontier brand vanilla and almond extract with no ill effects but I do not have a letter from them saying there is nothing else added. I have since made my own vanilla which was super easy but I continue to use their almond extract. But, yes as long as there are no illegals, extracts are allowed. Homemade vanilla 1 Quart Mason Jar (or other 1 quart glass jar) 8 - 16 vanilla pods (I bought mine online from the Boston Vanilla Bean Company) 1 Quart Quality Vodka (Rain, Sky, Absolute) Split pods vertically and use the knife to get the seeds loosened and place in the mason jar. Pour vodka over it until full. Place the lid on and shake until you see the beans start coming out of the pods. Put away for 6 weeks. Shake every so often. Use 8 pods for regular strength vanilla and up to 16 for double strength. You can top the container off with more vodka as needed adding more vanilla pods as needed. It will never spoil. The alcohol will preserve it. Yay! I found an easy recipe for almond extract. I guess I need to buy some of Lucy's almond flour now!!!! http://www.ehow.com/how_5365668_make-almond-extract.html Homemade almond extract (modified for SCD) Peeled, blanched almonds, about 4 oz. Food processor Quart-size glass jar Vodka*** Basket-type coffee filter Small bottles for the finished extract Step 1 Grind the almonds using a food processor. Don't process them too long or you'll make almond butter. Process them until they are in fine particles, about the size of ILLEGAL raw sugar crystals. (or almond flour would work I'm sure) Step 2 Put the ground-up almonds into a 1-quart glass jar. Step 3 Add 2 cups of good quality vodka to the jar. Each of these spirits will create a slightly different flavor in the finished product. Experiment to find which one you prefer. Step 4 Cover the jar and put it in a dark cupboard. Step 5 Shake the jar once a day for six weeks. Step 6 At the end of six weeks, strain the mixture through a coffee filter and place the strained almond extract into small bottles. ***The original recipe calls for which I'm pretty sure is illegal. If you follow the link provided, please be wary of this.*** Misty Kimble CD - no meds SCD - Jan 2008 > > what is the consensus on extracts? are they allowed? > > i'm wondering about things like peppermint or almond extract, but also stevia extract (if these contained only alcohol and the extracted item). > > and what about powdered stevia (with no other fillers)? > > thanks, > susannah. Stevia belongs to a family called Terpenoids. According to The Organic Constitutents of Higher Plants by Trevor , 2nd edition, page 158, “This class of glycosides (terpenoids) often have physiological effects on mammals and microorganisms.” Elaine noted on the adult listserv that, “Its molecular structure resembles a steroid. It is not SCD legal.” However, on the SCD-Autism list, she indicated that it might be used in strictly limited quantities for those children who absolutely cannot tolerate either honey or saccharin. Powdered stevia should be approached with extreme caution. At least one manufacturer of organic stevia includes “erythritol” which they claim is a “natural free flowing agent”. Erythritol is what is called a sugar alcohol. Sugar alcohols include things like mannitol, xylitol, and sorbitol which are used in a lot of commercial “sugar-free” stuff. They're allowed to get away with that because normally, our guts can't digest those sugar alcohols. But the bad bugs in our guts can, and will have a field day on them. If you elect to use stevia as a sweetener, read all ingredient lists very carefully, and research all ingredients. “All natural” or “organic” does not mean “SCD Legal.” If you are using stevia, and do not appear to be gaining any ground on SCD, it would be strongly recommended to eliminate the stevia for several weeks and keep a food log. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
Misty, I'm not even sure if it's still available, but when I was making my own herbal tinctures, I used Everclear, which is super-distilled and really high proof stuff. Might be interesting to try it with vanilla or almond extract. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everclear_(alcohol) tells what strengths and where it is available. I used to make an amazing " bruise juice " which was very popular with members of the Society for Creative Anachronism. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
