Guest guest
My splint removal dreams are a long way off, unfortunately. The initial estimate was a total of 8-12 weeks so I haven't even thought about when it would be. I still have a ton of stiches around the fistula area, and the PS said that he wouldn't breathe a sigh of relief until after the soft tissue " socket " has healed. He's really worried about the blood supply to the bone graft and it not taking. That's also the reason for the extended time in the splint. I think it takes 8-12 weeks for the bone to " harden " so until that time they want the area stabilized. It's not so bad though, because I had psyched myself up to be wired or banded - so just having the splint doesn't seem so bad - although I also don't have to go through interviews ) I actually told everyone that I wouldn't be able to talk right for about three months - so they took me off the rotation for oral presentations at school/work ) The PS actually has quite a fear that the scar tissue from my previous cleft surgeries will begin to pull my upper jaw back. He said as the healing progresses, that the screws become a little looser in the bone and the force of the muscle could cause a relapse. So for me, the scariest part really isn't over I guess. I'm really excited (and jealous ) of you! Who needs to chew when there's pasta and wine? I could live on that for more than a month. And of course, Alessandro! I wish you the best of luck next week ) -becky
