Guest guest
So today I woke up feeling strangely very positive despite the fact I'm more swollen on one side of the face so now I look lopsided and my palet is killing me (everytime I swallow I feel the bones literally move and tense up against my flesh) AND not having any hot water to shower with. Lucky for me it's darn hot here in NYC. Anyway, back to the plot. So I was feeling very chirpy today and really looking forward to going to see my ortho for the first time since my surgery last week. I thought he would be so pleased with the results because so far I am pretty pleased. Instead I guess I caught him on a bad day becuz boy did seeing him bring me doooooowwwwwnnn. I walk into the office and everyone is like, oh, hi Sara. You look good. Swollen but good. Maybe I'm a tad bit sensitive but I was like, you have to be kidding me, all you can say is you look good but swollen. Folks, I've had a remarkable recovery, come on! And what about my profile? What about how my teeth meet? Give me something more to cling onto. Nope. That was it except that they decided to add that maybe now I need a 2nd nose job to get my nose to go down again. Thanks a lot! And there I was trying to stay positive about the Miss Piggy look. I sit down in the orthos chair and he takes some pics of me from the front and from the side and then I see him come towards me with those plastic tongues they use to pull back your lips and get a really good shot of your teeth. I was like, YIKES! You have got to be joking! I can;t use those yet, I;m still in stitches and I have a cold sore. Nope he says, we must use those. So I grin and bear it while my stitch is ripping the inside of me and my sore starts bleeding again. Grosse I know. Sorry for the details. I saw my xrays and in them I could see where they put the titanium plates/screws in. I only have 4, 2 on each side but they're literally right underneath my eyes so now I understand the reason behind the puffy cheeks and the pain right in that spot as well as the tender sinuses. Then I asked my ortho about how big the space that was left from where they removed the upper bicuspids. Apparently I touched a sore spot because that really set him going. He said that it was much bigger than it should be and he doesn't understand why and that my surgeon has some explaining to do. The gist of it was that my surgeon apparently did not communicate with him very well pre-surgery which I wish he had told me because I would have done something about it. But no, right before surgery he said everything was fine. I don't get doctors! Anyway, the good news is that the gaps can be still closed via orthodontics. The bad news is that it will add a lot more time to how long I have to wear braces once I get the splint off. This is not good news at all for me because I need to move out of NYC pronto and find a job in Italy soon and having an ortho in NYC is just not very feasible. Apparently the spaces should have been about 2.5mm and instead they are 5mm (an average tooth is 7mm wide). I have the best faith in my surgeon and I assume that he didn't close the gap as much as anticipated because he might have hit a nerve and didn't want to cause any further damage. We'll see tomorrow when I go see him for my first post-op visit. Just wanted to share because it goes to show how you can be in a really good mood and then one word from one of your doctors can really make you gloomy. I think my ortho is great but today I really wanted to hit him on the head and tell him to ease up on me with the bad mood. Goes to show that doctors are human too and no one is perfect. And so the good funks and bad funks rollercoaster ride continues... Sara xx
Guest guest
sara - i can't imagine them coming at you with those plastic cheek expander things! i think i would have simply passed out from the pain!!! and the damn - " it will take longer in orthodontia " - is the worst ( they really are crazy people. like we have nothing else going on then just walking around in braces! some people need to start glorious, wine producing lives on italian villas and send us some goooooood pictures. jeez. sorry they brought you down. at least you get to see your surgeon tomorrow. my understanding is god can't make it next week because of some real estate thing in jersey. go figure ) keep your chin (and it's beautiful) up! -becky ps...maybe you just got too used to us gushing over your results i mean - you can't compare how happy we are for you to silly nurses! Guest guest
becky, ur right, you guys spoiled me rotten by showering me with compliments! i think i over did it today with activity because I am now back on the codeine which I had come off of 2 days ago. I guess the ups and downs are on all fronts. Fingers crossed tomorrow I will be given elastics that I can remove to brush my teeth. The glory of it! I seriously have an angora sweater growing on my tongue. I keep on coughing up hairs like a cat, I swear it! Still, after today's disappointment I am not putting my hopes up too high just in case. When all of this is done and over with I'm going to have you all come and visit at the vineyard and we can have ourselves a Orthognathic Surgery Survivors feast. Top item on the menu - big fat sandwhiches for all of us to bite into perfectly:-) Mmm, I really like this vision. I am going to hold on to it and hope that I dream about it tonite. Guest guest
Oh Sara how awful for you. God and using the plastic tougues that make you look like you're on a rollcoaster at 100 miles an hour could not have been pleasent at all. They hurt at the best of times yet alone with stiches and a coldsore. I had to clap my hands around my mouth when i was reading it, really felt for you hon. Not good news about having to having to wear the braces for longer either is it? How annoying, I can understand totally the disappointment of the delay in the whole process. You physic yourself to a certain finishing line, its the only way to get through it all, telling yourself just this bit then this bit and its all over, so when someone says, actually its going to be longer, your whole visulisation of the finishing line blurs out of sight and you become angery and upset and out of control of whats going on. Hang in there honey, keep positive, keep cheery, keep smiling (inside!). I think you look fab and have done really well and i am hoping i will have the same kind of recovery as you. Thank you for asking about the wedding plans, they are coming along fine, obviously disppointed that i won't be ready for the wedding but maybe its for the best? Just frustrated with being kept in the dark about whats going on....so no op in june/july as promised, more like november/december? Will demand a good chat with my OD when i go back on the 13th July!! How are yours coming along, have you done any planning yet? Take care, B > So today I woke up feeling strangely very positive despite the fact > I'm more swollen on one side of the face so now I look lopsided and > my palet is killing me (everytime I swallow I feel the bones > literally move and tense up against my flesh) AND not having any hot > water to shower with. Guest guest
Sara, I'm lopsided too:-)....The right side of my face is still ridiculously swollen, while the left is almost back to normal... I'm sorry to hear about your appointment. I can't believe they came at you with the cheek things....that's evil! My ortho just looked in my mouth and then resceduled me for a couple weeks later. I'm sure your nose will come down a little, and if it doesn't, well, its okay. You DO look beautiful!!!!!! I think that the surgery went very well for you and you look awesome. I hope they didn't get you down too much. Your gaps can probably be closed fairly quickly with powerchains, and I'm sure the surgeon knew what he was doing. Hope you have a better appt with your surgeon:-).
Guest guest
Sara, Awww, girl ... I'm so sorry about your icky appointment! I haven't seen my Orthodontists yet, post-op. But, geez ... if I see that plastic-pull-your-cheeks-around-the-back-of-my-head thing ... I'm running away! Don't get too discouraged. Maybe with some communication your two doctors can figure out an approach that will have you brace-less and on a plane Italy - sooner than you think. I've got my fingers crossed for ya! Guest guest
Thanks Carol:-) Dr Sachs actually made me feel a lot better about the whole thing today and I can even see the gaps left by the two missing teeth and they are actually really small so I'm hoping that I can still do all of this in 6 mths tops. Fingers crossed! Guest guest
HI, Sorry to hear about your doc bringing you down.It is your classic case of doctor arogence. I had a terrible night the 1st night post op and the only thing that settled my absolutely throbbing head was an injection of morphine. They were so eager to getme on oral meds however that they gave me dilaudid liquid instead and i had a reaction to it. Major itching and blotchy redness everywhere....so at 3am when I am still awake and crying from pain,I request some morph to help me get at least 3 hours sleep--get this--they decide to argue with me about the fact that I should be on oral meds...at 3 qm!! I finally said if there is still an order in place then I want the morph. She gave it to me and yes, I fell asleep and woke at 7am, to the doc asking me waht my problem was. He doesnt seem impressed at all with me and starts saying that the thing is 'his patients dont usually have pain' and that the 'dilaudid worked' I had to remind hin that I had a reaction to the dilaudid (thank you v ery much)...anyway...as you can see it was upsetting and absolutely rediculous. So any of you out there that have to deal with any of this, rem to stick up for yourselves. You have the right to take charge of your ownhealth & well-being....
