Lori, I'm so sorry, honey. But, you know the old saying, when one

door closes, another opens. Something fabulous will come along,

especially for someone with your training.

my one last class today to be official with Educare. It was the " I'm

safe your safe " take-down techniques. I was told that I failed the

practical portion of it. I have made excellent grades on all of the

written exams just did not pass the physical part of the take down

procedures they were trying to teach us so I no longer have a job.

Can you try again? I would think as you lose more weight it will be easier

to do the take down. I believe I may have to learn that if I get one of the

jobs I have applied for.

Dear Lori

We used to call what you call " take-down, " --- a " full restraint. " Are they

saying you are not strong enough? Or?

ly, in most cases where patients on wards became vioilent, it was far

more likely the personnel would be injured as they would do everything they

could to not injure the patient.

hang in there,

love,

ceep

Goodmorning dear ceep,

The job I had was working with mentally retarded. Occasionally

they get extremely upset and start to harm others or themselves. There

is a couple of techniques to deal with it the most physical one being

what is called a take down. It actually is an old term since it hasn't

been used in the last couple of years but it is basically when you have

to take a client to the floor to prevent further harm. In the entire

time I have worked with MR's I have actually only seen it done once and

that was in 1994. I have yet to see us have to do it with the clients we

work with at MHMR who would be coming to this program.

They told me I can try again in 6 months. I've considered that and

probably will not have to redo the entire course but just that portion.

I don't know. All they said was that they did not believe I could do one

safely. I have been working with MR's on and off since 1994 and have

only seen one take down. That one was in '94. I have been working with

these consumers as a volunteer for 6 months. The young lady I work with

the most has gone from 3 to 5 behaviors a week down to 3 or 4 behaviors

in the last 6 months. Her behaviors are also not as bad as they use to

be. The ironic thing is that the day I was hired, they fired me 5

minutes later because they finally found my application and the interview

notes from the first interviewer. The application included all of the

statistical data including government forms that would give them credit

for hiring a disabled person. I was hired back the following morning. I

suspect they were trying to find a reason to fire me. I had passed all

of the written exams with a 92 or better. The key thing in their version

of the take down was to prevent it before it ever started (like duh) and

that is why we haven't had to do a take down in the day hab program ever

(again duh.) So, if I have been able to head it off at the pass with the

clients for the last 6 months and I would be working with the same

clients at this program (we got subcontracted out), why on earth would I

all of a sudden not be able to do the job now. The only technique I have

ever had to use was when a client tried hitting me and I was able to

block the hit. I have this wonderful momma voice that basically was like

" Don't you even try that again. " Does any of this make sense? Am I

being to logical? Now, the other thing is that I am still heavy. I

weigh about 340 and I wonder how much of this has to do with the weight

issue.
