hi everyone,i'm new to this list -- am planning to start the SCD soon (have been struggling with ulcerative colitis for the past ten years)!i have a question: i am traveling to korea from july 23 to august 18; while i'm there, it will be virtually impossible for me to adhere to the SCD (will not be cooking for myself all the time, etc).  would it make sense for me to start the diet now and follow it until i leave (so, for about 5 weeks), and then try to stay as SCD-legal as possible while i'm there?  or would it make more sense to begin after i return?  i am already pretty nervous about the prospect of traveling while experiencing UC symptoms (urgency, D, etc), and i don't want to put my system through a lot of changes just before i leave.  i also know that the SCD is a long-term plan, and starting and stopping is not going to be helpful, especially at the very beginning.  on the other hand, i've been going through a pretty bad flare recently, and i'm anxious to start the SCD as soon as possible.

any advice or thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!thanks, yumi

would it make sense for me to start the diet now and follow it until i leave (so, for about 5 weeks), and then try to stay as SCD-legal as possible while i'm there?Well, depending on your diet now, it would probably be really beneficial for you to just try to stay as SCD legal as possible starting now. Even if while you're traveling you can't avoid all the little illegals, you can stay mostly away from grains and sugar. Even if you aren't technically 100% SCD, I think it would be better than nothing. I agree with Alyssa. Although SCD only works if you follow it strictly, it would

not hurt to avoid illegals as much as possible. I don't think it is a good idea

to do SCD for a few weeks and then stop because you will have some " die off "

initially of the weaker gut bugs and then you will feed the bugs that are left

behind. I think this is why people who start and stop on SCD frequently don't

see the benefits.

However, you can start to do something for your gut. Start with the big ones-

gluten, lactose, sugars and starches. Before I even heard of SCD I went

gluten/lacose free. The day I was out and ate a sandwich- I had watery D for

days the next day. This is when I believed diet makes a difference and found

SCD.

Try to eat right and avoid illegals as much as possible. It would probably be

impossible to avoid rice in Korea, but avoid as much as possible. As soon as

you return, start intro.

These next 5 weeks, start preparing to start SCD. Get a yogurt maker. Start to

cook legal broth and soup and freeze in small batches. Cook and puree some

apples and freeze them too. Cook and freeze beef patties for snacks. DCCD, if

you can find it, also freezes well. Buy some bananas, let them get really ripe,

and freeze them too.

Then you will have a head start on intro when you return.

I wouldn't start it before an international trip. For one, you've got the

potential die-off ickiness. And, at least in my experience, I didn't have an

issue with SCD illegals. After I was on the diet for a short period of time I

started to have major issues with them (accidentally ingested of course). If

the potential is there for you to hyper-react because you're starting a new way

of eating, I would postpone. But that's just me :)

I agree as well. Lots of gut instability issues in the beginning of the diet.
