Hi

I know what you mean, all these big words. For an explanation of the

ones that are related to jaw surgery check out: http://www.oc-

j.com/june00/presurg.htm

You'll find an explanation of what a Le Forte is. The name actually

comes from, if I'm not mistaken, either the first doctor who tried the

procedure or the first patient, whom I believe was in the army believe

it or not. There are actually a lot of useful links for research saved

under LINKS on this site.

As for septoplasty and turbinectomy. Well septoplasty comes from SEPTUM

which is the part that divides your two nostrils put VERY simply.

Sometimes a person can have a deviated septum so one nostril has less

of an airway to breath through. A septoplasty can correct this by

straightening it. Turbinectomy refers to the turbinates, also part of

your nose. They are what sort of traps the air we breathe in and more

or less filters it through so that we don't get too much air all at

once. Sometimes people can have larger than necessary turbinates making

breathing harder. Turbinectomy usually involves zapping the turbinates

with a laser to shrink them. I think some people also get them removed

all together.

Anyway, that's enough from me. I'm no med student either so if any one

has a more accurate way of describing the above please chime in!

Hey, Sara, great definitions! Hope you're feeling better!// Hi,

. I was doing a web search a while back and found a " Glossary

of Orthognathic Terms " on the following website:

http://www.5starhealth.com/dentistry/orthognathic/glossary.htm .It

doesn't contain the words septoplasty and turbinectomy, but it lists

words/phrases such as LeFort I Osteotomy,Sagittal Split Osteotomy,

and Surgical Splint, to name a few. It's also a good idea to print

off a copy of it for future use - it's fourteen pages long. Hope this

helps you , and anyone else too. / Diane -

,

septoplasty: surgery to repair a deviated septum. The septum is the

cartilage that seperates your nostrils.

turbindectimy: surgery to remove tissue form the turbinates in your

nose. From what I've been able to gather from my doctor, the

turbinates are structures that swell whenever a person has an allergic

reaction. They are the structures that swell causing a person to feel

congested. They should be the thickness of toothpicks. Mine are like

little sausages sitting up there in my nasal cavity so they are going

to " thin' out some of the internal membranes. This has nothing to do

with jaw surgery...I just happen to be having these procedures at the

same time as my upper jaw advancement.

AS for the Lefort I you'll have to get that answer from someone else.

Hope this helps.
