There is no way that your body can function well on only 1500 to 2000 calories with that much physical activity. If you're working out for 4 hours per day, you just plain need more fuel. Your body is giving you the signal that it needs more. I don't think that this is just " head hunger " or emotional eating. Just my opinion, of course. Guest guest
You didn't say how much protein you get in supplement form to help you with all that body busy. That will help sustain you in those areas, AND reduce carb cravings. You have to plan a carb for after your major work-outs, though. Since we can't do recovery drinks (50g sugar?), plan for a sandwich or some safe carb. I want every Twinkie in this state, and I do about as hearty a work out as a newborn kitten. Half a ham sandwich is a MUCH better choice. If you graze, you get your wt back. I don't care if it's " healthy " food. If you graze, you gain. You have to make your own plan. I get 4 feedings. They can be snacks or meals, but not 4 meals AND snacks. I eat all normal foods, but milk & sugar. Unless pasta is a trigger food for you, having it now & then is fine. Good. I love pasta. I can eat it now & then, but if I make a batch of angel hair spaghetti, I will make it 2 of my 4 per day until gone. LOL! And I like it with bread. I go to a lot of trouble NOT to feel bad about food. Like you, I want to be in charge. If I overeat, I feel miserable, no need for guilt there. LOL! If I get stupid and think I can eat sugar (refer to Peeps Incident), I gain wt. No guilt needed, built -in consequence. See? But noooooooooooo, milk, nooooooooo sugar. And I do 6+ protein shakes per day. Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. Guest guest
When I train hard, I think about food all of the time, too. I don't know if people on this board pay much attention to me because I spout off all of the time, but when I train I talk about food all of the time. The good thing is, I don't talk about Doritos or ice cream. I think I make people on this board sick talking about chopped broccoli mixed with high quality yogurt and a little salt. I had a serious zuchinni mixed w/ stewed tomatoes phase, and a really, in retrospect disgusting, non-fat cottage cheese phase. Oh, yeah, and then there was the chard. I have discovered what is to work hard and to " feed your body " . Powerful. Not a pacifyier, but FUEL. You go girl!!! Guest guest
Well, not exactly. I do protein often just before a meal to blunt my appetite. My " meals " are not always meals. Half an apple might be one. I don't use the word snack very often. Just because in my mind, that implied I'd get 4 meals PLUS a snack. Feedings would be more accurate. At the most 2 are actual meals, 2 are just enough to take pills. I only do 4 because that's how many sets of pills I do. My rule is I take pills when I eat, and I eat when I take pills. No pills, no food. They work well to govern each other. I'm a volume eater, so breaking into the 4 is enough of a challenge. sigh Grazing is like leaving a box of crackers on the counter or taking them to your deck. A bite every few minutes vs a portion every few hours. Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. Guest guest
I totally agree with . I know the old 2 squares is what got me obese in the first place, and kept me that way. But, I'm also a volume eater. Maybe that's why it works for me, too. It seems like I eat constantly throughout the day, but I will never let myself get so hungry that I'll overeat at one setting...well, at least I try not to. We're all so different, though, so what works for one may be considered grazing for another. The best we can do is to find what works best for each of us. in NJ ***************************** > Well, not exactly. > > I do protein often just before a meal to blunt my appetite. Guest guest
Interesting thread here... I guess we each need to define for ourselves what grazing is. To me " grazing " is picking. Snacking without it being planned, when I start to lose track. It can be one simple pretzel. But the problem is for me, one pretzel will lead to another later and another and another. When I was following a successful hypogylcemic diet and losing weight and feeling terrific about 20 years ago, I was eating 8 " meals " a day. But a meal was planned. It wasn't picking. for example 1 ounce of turkey breast and 1/2 slice special whole grain bread from health food store was a meal. Grazing is when I am not keeping track of my eating. I am curious to know what others define as grazing for them. from NJ Re: Confused sometimes. Guest guest
> I am curious to know what others define as grazing for them. For me, it's eating mindlessly. If I have a bowl of food, even healthy food, within reach, and I nibble on it without thinking -- I've gone through a whole can of nuts, for example, instead of a single serving. When it was really bad, I was going through nearly a pound of candy a day, one piece at a time, over hours -- never enough at one time to dump, but enough to pack on the pounds. Nowadays I don't keep food near the computer. I will bring a meal on a plate to the desk, but I don't keep anything munchable around after that meal is finished. Grazing is also wandering through the kitchen, looking for something to munch on, rather than getting real with one good protein meal. A taste of this, a nibble of that, nothing to get full on, and no real beginning or end to the eating, as there should be with a meal. Opening the fridge 18 times, even though I know nothing has changed since last time. This is when I need some real nutrition, or something to do. Boredom is terribly linked with grazing, for me. ~~ Lyn G
Guest guest
.. Opening the fridge 18 times, > even though I know nothing has changed since last time. WOW ..... I thought I was the only one who did this! When I find myself doing it I know there is a problem whether I get something out of it or not. But what is it psychologically about this opening the refrigerator and checking it. Guest guest
This reminds me of a friend of mine who would literally eat 5 or 6 times a day. I might add she has never had a weight problem. She would take her meals and divide them up over 5 or 6 meals. For instance, she might have 2 ounces of chicken and some rice for lunch and an apple at about 2:30. Then she would have a small chef salad for dinner and maybe 1/2 cup of soup later in the evening. I would never consider what she did as grazing. I always figured she just couldn't eat a lot at one time and spread it out over the day. Guest guest
This has been a really interesting thread to read, especially considering I've been having food " issues " recently -- boyfriend broke up with me, school started again and is really busy, supposed to be working on my thesis, and just got laid off from the part-time job that was supposed to be paying the bills. I've been finding that nothing sounds good, very little tastes good (with the exception of cookies for some reason, which I'm usually really good about staying away from), and I'm at the fridge about every 15 minutes to see if something inspires me. I know I'm not getting my protein (not into the shakes, bleah! ) and what seems appealing or tastes good are starchy carbs which I know are bad for me (and what I always used to turn to). I'm really afraid about gaining weight (just started back at the gym after about six weeks of not being able to fit it into my schedule), and not sure what to do to get my brain and body out of this funk. Any suggestions? Thanks! -
