Guest guest
My first week post op I had so much drainage that I thought I was drowning in mucus! I am not wired...just banded tightly and my surgeon had me gargle with orange juice several times and spit out what I could. The fruit acid breaks down the mucus to a point where you can get it to move...I don't know how this would work if you are wired shut though...perhaps gargle longer??? give the acids more time to work???hope this helps. Guest guest
I had upper jaw surgery exactly a month ago today...wow, it's been a month...anyways, Yes, I had that lovely sinus drainage up until last week. I think I complicated matters by getting a septoplasty 12 days post-op, but the drainage is perfectly normal. I found the easiest way to deal with it was to keep the sudafed coming and try to drink as much water as possible. I know it's gross, but it does go away, I promise:- ). > I have been many of the posts and they have been helppful and even > encouraging. Guest guest
I'm 11 days post op, and yes - I've still got the same kind of drainage from my nose. Mine is sometimes red, but moreso it is a brown-ish type color. I asked my OS about this and still perfectly normal to be happening. Guest guest
, Thanks for the Sudafed tip...I didn't think of trying that. I bet that will help with the sinus pressure that I am still feeling from the swelling too! Many thanks, Judy > > I have been many of the posts and they have been helppful and even > > encouraging. Guest guest
Too polite? Nope. We generally talk the truth on these two boards. If you had work on the upper, not at all unusual. The upper areas are full of very vascular tissue, and there's often a lot of persistent drainage, with blood (and dried blood, which is darker) included. If you have fever, if the discharge is foul smelling, or looks greenish, (or if you abandoned your antibiotics too early) worry about infection. Otherwise, it's probably just your body shedding the aftermath of a huge invasion. But if it's troubling you -- hey, you've paid (or your insurance company will) for your care, and don't hesitate to rattle the cage of those who truly know your case. It's never a problem to call; it can be, if you have a problem and don't. If you had LOWER only and have this problem, call your surgeon's office and ask what the heck could be going on. Guest guest
mine was bloody dark too so don't worry and more in one nostril than the other, as in the nostril where the naso gastric tube had been inserted. i'm now almost 4 weeks post-op and it's gotten way better, almost gone. Guest guest
careful with the OJ especially if you're wired. On the post-op instructions I got from my surgeon it specifically said to avoid OJ if you were wired. The strings in OJ can get stuck inside and we don't want to add more gunk in there, do we?:-) Sara > > I have been many of the posts and they have been helppful and even > > encouraging. Guest guest
Would OJ with No Pulp be OK? ~Joanne > careful with the OJ especially if you're wired. Guest guest
Not sure. My OS told me to avoid OJ for the first 10 days in general because he said that it can be too acidic on the stomach after the anesthesia. In fact I've had bad reactions to both cranberry juice and OJ after surgery when they were given to me in the hospital. They made me both vomit. But maybe OJ with no pulp for just gargling with would be ok. I guess each of our doctors is the best person to answer this question. Sara > > careful with the OJ especially if you're wired. Guest guest
Hey sorry to but in but lemonade has a lot of citric acid in it too, and it doesn't have pulp in it. I dont know if i would hurt anything or not, but it might be worth a try. The stuff minute maid makes is pretty good espically the pink lemonade. > > careful with the OJ especially if you're wired. Guest guest
Hi , that's OK. Sara told me anything with acid might affect the stomach because of the anesthesia for the 1st 10 days. Would gargling (not swallowing) be just as effective? Our doctors would probably be better able to answer... ~Joanne > Hey sorry to but in but lemonade has a lot of citric acid in it too, > and it doesn't have pulp in it.
