It has to do with blood draining from the hands. I know if I hold my hand in the air for just a moment or two, the veins disappear, but bringing them down flat or hanging them at my sides they fill right back up again and sit near the surface of the skin. I think of them as my " old lady hands. " I know that 32 is still a " youngster " in many ways, but I wouldn't rule it out entirely as a partial cause to the vein issue. Guest guest
Hi everyone! I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Acie and I just celebrated my one year anniversary from RNY last week. I'm down 133lbs and doing really well. At 202 I'm right on the cusp and battling to try and lose those magical 3lbs - having my weight start with a 1 seems unreal. I just had my labs done and found both my b-12 and iron on a serious downward slide, so I'm paying close attention to supplements now. I do have one question....now, I understand that as I lose fat things like bones and veins become more visible. I thought I had a couple of varicose veins, but since losing the weight I'm discovering lots of the little buggers. That makes sense to me. However, I've also noticed that the veins in my hands seem to be bulging sometimes. It doesn't seem to be the case in the morning, but I do tend to notice it most evenings. My husband tried to tell me it's all just a part of getting older, but at 32 I'm not buying that. They don't hurt at all, I just don't like how it looks. Vanity aside, I'm wondering if anyone else has had this happen. I'm trying to figure out if this is just one of those things, or if it could be an indication of a deficiency of some kind. Any ideas? Guest guest
I'm 53 and have lost 170 lbs. I had a lot of really extreme varicose veins in my legs that are even more prominent since I lost weight. However, they still don't hurt, they're just more unsightly. I also have more prominent veins in my hands. It's pretty confusing having WLS surgery when you're older than about 30. I'm never sure which is aging and which is weight loss. However, I am pretty sure that the veins prominence has nothing to do with any kind of deficiency. Barbara Jean One year out and strange veins > Hi everyone! I wanted to introduce myself. Guest guest
*LOL* Did you ever watch HSN? I used to love Adrien Arpel's Signature Club A line. Her face doesn't show her age at all (face lifts, botox which I am sure she denies ... but her hands show it) Re: One year out and strange veins > Reminds me once that someone told me I didn't look my age (why, thank you!), > but she says, lemme see your hands. Guest guest
Wow...thanks for the tip Beth! I tried it, and voile'..for a moment, my hands and arms looked normal! Duh...why didn't I think of this...and to think I was stuck with these wormy old ladies hands 24/7! Well, I AM an old lady, and I AM stuck with them...but I can make it go away for a time...this is fun! Regards~ Jacque I know if I hold my hand in the air for just a moment or two, the veins disappear, but bringing them down flat or hanging them at my sides they fill right back up again and sit near the surface of the skin. Guest guest
Well ain't that special! As long as you had your hands out for her inspection and subsequent comment, you should have illustrated their dexterity despite their wizened appearance by flipping her the finger. LOL! Guest guest
I've noticed those bulging veins too: hands, arms AND some small ones at my temples (they're bluish and make me look like something from " The Outer Limits " ). I don't see any of these all the time, but it seems more prominent after exercising. But here's something that has happened to me appearance-wise that most probably is related to the weight loss: my neck glands are very prominent. You know, under your chin and on each side of your throat? At first I was concerned that my glands were swollen (since I was seeing them) and that I was possibly sick. So I went to my ENT and she gave me a thorough exam, said nothing was wrong, but that what had happened was that my glands had " dropped " (they are usually tucked up under your chin), which was unusual in that she mostly sees that in seniors (I am 52 this month), which she said was rather young for this to have happened.) Now I told her that since I hadn't really seen my neck in about 25 years, I have no idea when my glands decided to come out of hiding, but Dr. said the only conclusion she could make (theory) was that it was a result of my massive weight loss (200 lbs.) My bulging glands bother me a whole lot more than my bulging veins, but NEITHER of them would bother me nearly as much as once again having a bulging body. However, I've also > noticed that the veins in my hands seem to be bulging sometimes. I'm almost 20 years older than you, but I've definitely noticed the same thing. I now have varicose veins in one leg, and what looks like the beginnings of them in the other leg. I'm not sure if they were there all along and just covered by the fat, or what. They don't ache or anything. I also have bulging veins in my hands and forearms. I've been buying 3/4 length sleeves because of the batwings, but in some respects that length just accentuates the veins. It really does have an aging effect, I think they can look positively haggy at times. But I don't think there's much we can do about it, and the tradeoff for the weight loss is still worth it. It also doesn't surprise me, since my mother has always had bad varicose veins. I know there's a genetic component there. Celia
