Guest guest
Okay, so I have my colonoscopy in a week. I'm actually pretty nervous, even though it shouldn't be too big of a deal. Anyways, I have a few questions that I couldn't find in the archives or files: 1) How do you strain homemade chicken broth so it's clear? 2) I can only think of white grape juice as a legal clear non-red/ purple juice. Any other suggestions? 3) If I were to juice something myself, how would I filter THAT so it's clear? Is that even something I could drink for the prep day? Thanks guys! Cheers! Guest guest
Hi Alyssa, I will be thinking good things for you. I don't have the definite answer, but I am thinking a strainer lined with cheesecloth would work? The other clear drink would be to brew iced tea sweetened with a little honey. Good luck!! Guest guest
you could just pour the soup thru a strainer - and drink the broth - i used white grape 1st time and water maybe 2nd time?? or dil white grape - don't worry it's nothing - i'm being re-endoscopied next thursday to rule out throat stuff - probably just hearrtburn (let's hope ) it's annoying the night before but most are fine after - don't worry :-) eileen > > Okay, so I have my colonoscopy in a week. Guest guest
Good Luck Alyssa! I'm not sure what you're nervous about, but I know when I have to get my yearly one in a few months, I am nervous as heck about the results! You know- you want them to show improvement after all of this work, but what if they don't?!! Anyway, the general idea is to just not drink anything that might discolor your intestines (dark colored and artificially colored drinks). Do you have a juicer? If so, I know when I do apples and oranges (both good options) it strains everything out. If you are juicing by hand, oranges (maybe even a splash of lemon?) would be good. And you can follow Eileen's advice and just pour it through a strainer. -Joanna SCD 9/2009, Crohn's 1992, 22.5mg Prednisone In BTVC-SCD , Alyssa Luck <luckycharms@> wrote: Okay, so I have my colonoscopy in a week. Guest guest
On straining - I found a great strainer in a Chinese grocery store, the mesh is very fine, but liquid gets thru. It has a small hook so it can rest on the brim of the pot.

Guest guest
Sorry to hear you have to have the colonoscopy. Phooey! It probably won't be as big a deal as you are worrying about now, not that that is any consolation at the moment. I strained my chicken broth through several layers of cheesecloth. It was nice and clear. When I had my last one, the only prohibition against the red/purple was artificial dyes in Jello, etc. Real pureple grape juice was fine. And I used it. I had apple juice, Welch's grape juices, purple and white grape juice as well. I made gelatin with the grape juices and that went down well and seemed to keep me somewhat less hungry along with the chicken broth. Peppermint tea was soothing that day as well. Have plenty of Vaseline on hand if your rear gets sore. Mine sure did! Okay, so I have my colonoscopy in a week. I'm actually pretty nervous, even though it shouldn't be too big of a deal. Guest guest
I know they say the liquids need to be clear, but the chicken broth is OK. I made my own, of course. I would say it wasn't totally clear, a bit cloudy, but you are straining out the little bits of stuff. He said I was nice and squeaky clean, so obviously my naturally cloudy chicken broth and real purple grape juice did NOT cause any trouble. But white grape juice would be fine, too. Oops I guess I should have used a different word. Guest guest
hi Alyssa, you can have pineapple juice as well.. or natural apple (if ya squeeze it yourself..) you dont have to strain the chicken broth, as long as you just drink the broth.. i believe that its only the colored and solid.. stuff they worry about.. i had 2 colonoscopies within a month n a half.. it'll be fine.. once they put you out, its cake.. a little uncomfortable.. (in terms of expelling stuff before n after..) but its painless.. (should be at least..) good luck! pAUL  Okay, so I have my colonoscopy in a week. Guest guest
Alyssa,At the grocery store today, along with the canning supplies, there was a package of " jelly strainer bags " for sale. They said they could be used to strain jelly, juice, and soup. They looked a lot like the bag that came with the Yogourmet yogurt maker, if you have that. It is a cotton cloth. I think that the weave looks a little tighter than a cheesecloth - although it is a long time since I saw cheesecloth, so I'm not positive about that. The company making them is Norpro, but I imagine there are other companies making similar bags. $4 for two bags. Good luck with the colonoscopy Jackie  Take a look at the colonoscopy file in the Getting Started folder of our library. It's my own experience, but it might give you some tips on how to proceed. Guest guest
Alyssa My gastroenterologist gave me quite a lecture when he first discussed my going on a clear liquid diet, back when he was helping me get diagnosed and learning to deal with my Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. Slightly cloudy is OK with a clear liquid diet. Clear refers more to the absence of solid foods and large particles and fiber than a visual look. Or so my doctor stated emphatically! Colors also play a role if you’re dealing with scans and procedures involving cameras; reds and oranges disrupt things giving skewed results… With broth you can reach a slightly cloudy state, that tends to clear up when the broth is warmed up. Apple juice is the preferred juice on a clear liquid diet, and you can get it filtered and diluted enough to reach a slightly cloudy state. Dilution is also part of achieving the clear state. Other juices take more dilution and filtering to achieve a particle-free state. If you’re prepping for a colonoscopy, I’d just use apple juice; easier on the gut than other juices and contains plenty of potassium. Kim M. Guest guest
,I hope you don't mind me asking this question: Do you feel cured as a result of not having your colon and do you feel like you never had the disease or is not having a colon very difficult too?tte Hi Alyssa, I have been reading your e-mails the last few days since I joined. You are a very bright young girl. A positive attitude is good when dealing with this disorder. I was 17 when I was diagnosed with UC. That was a few years ago. I am 45 now. In 94 and 95, I had two stage surgery to remove my colon. I no longer have UC due to my surgery. But, if I had your amount of knowledge at the time, I would most likely still have my colon. I don’t look back with regret though. I feel it has given me a lot of experience and I now know what to watch for in my son who has now been diagnosed with Celiac. I wish you best of improvement in your health. Good luck. Guest guest
Hi again tte, I don’t mind at all. I am definitely cured in the sense that I lost all the pain and the flare ups. But, suddenly I had a much shorter transit time and therefore would/will go to the bathroom more frequently on a daily basis. (Between 12 – 15 times a day) since 1994. I have a very understanding husband thank goodness. And the surgery caused a lot of scar tissue in my body. The last 6 months, since my 11 year old son was diagnosed with Celiac our household became gluten and dairy free. I am feeling even better than post surgery and my transit frequency has reduced by at least half. Changing over to organics the past 6 years has really helped too. Before having access to a home computer in the 90’s the information was just not available and I was completely unaware of hidden names for wheat and dairy. I thought Whey was wheat. Dieticians in the hospital were no help either. The only thing I would like to have had the opportunity to try is this type of diet with organics. I now believe my family has a history of Celiac and if I/we were to follow a gluten-free etc. diet, I may have avoided UC. I don’t believe a cure from the medical field is in our near future. Awful to say. I believe a lot of the cure lies in our own hands and how we take care of ourselves. Don’t get me wrong in that, I still feel there is definitely a role for the medical professionals, but we really need to look out for ourselves and watch our symptoms.
