Guest guest
I have been on the SCD for 4 months already, but do not feel confident enough to stop taking my meds. Are you still taking your medications being on the SCD or became med-free as soon as you started the diet? Sometimes I get the feeling that I am way backwards since I still do the meds. Elaine says that any medications might intrude upon the effect of the diet, but I do not feel confident enough to stop them now. Let me know your thoughts. Thank you! Guest guest
Hi Lilia, Meds don't interfere with the diet. In fact, Elaine recommends one keep taking the necessary meds they need. I personally think it is important to use all avenues for healing- as that is the goal. There are individuals who choose to stop taking medication and only do SCD. In most of these cases, this decision is a personal one, and has been done against the advice of their physicians. It is a decision they made personally while weighing the pros and cons for themselves. What one person decides for him or her self can not be decided for another. Without large controlled studies available on SCD alone as intervention, one can not make this kind of decision for another person. When I read about people stopping meds, I notice that they make this decision after being on SCD for a while and their symptoms are under control for a good time too. When or if this happens is different for everyone. I have been on SCD over a year and still take sulfasalazine prescribed by my doctor. I also made the individual decision to use LDN. Stay on SCD, take necessary meds, and continue to do well PJ > > I have been on the SCD for 4 months already, but do not feel confident enough to stop taking my meds. Guest guest
Elaine also said that we should continue taking any meds we need. I think most (or many) of us do need to continue our meds for some time, maybe very long term. It all depends. I tend to think that the diet is enough change for most people without trying to ditch the meds at the same time. A lot of times we need the meds for support until there's enough healing to start, cautiously, decreasing them. Don't feel guilty if you need your meds. Guest guest
I didn't drop my meds when starting SCD. After 1.5 years, I still take Pentasa and LDN. I'll probably take meds for a long time to come just because I don't want to mess anything up. So don't feel you have to stop your meds. If you need them, take them. Guest guest
I stopped taking my meds when I started the diet over three years ago (I was between flares at the time). I've had tremendous success with SCD. I've been med-free for over three years and I'm 100% symptom free as long as I stick pretty close to the diet. It's only been the last 6 months or so that I could say I have no symptoms whatsoever - but all symptoms got better and better over time. I'm glad I stayed off all the meds but I think everyone is different. With respect, Elaine NEVER said not to take necessary medication. Where did the idea that medications can intrude on the diet come from? Guest guest
Ok, so I have obvoiusly misread Elaine's book. I know of people who are med-free and do the diet only. They feel great and have no symptoms. I just hate the idea of taking medications all my life, so at least decreasing on them will be a good thing in the future.
