Did going on the diet make you give up alot of caffienated beverages that you were drinking before? Loss of caffiene gives me terrible headaches.. What about the meds you may be on? Some of my meds main side effects are headaches.

Hi all!I'm new to the group, so I apologize if this is a very repeated question... I just started SCD last week and it's going really well. Unfortunately, I keep getting a lot of headaches. They usually start in the afternoon and continue through the evening. Last night's headache lasted all night. Is this normal? If it is a symptom, will it go away? Thanks in advance!shaaren

Actually, I can't tolerate caffeine very well, so I didn't have to give that up.

I'm on Lialda, and with last week's flare, my doc upped me to 4 pills (instead of 2).

Good point, though - maybe it's unrelated to the diet.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to SCD.

There are some possible explanations- one is die- off. The other may be blood

sugar changes if you had a lot of carbohydrates before starting SCD, especially

sugary treats, cookies, candy, or pasta, potatoes, bread-etc. Also, if you were

used to caffeine containing drinks like soda- so your body is missing the

caffeine and or sugar.

All of this should resolve in time. If it is sugar you are missing, try drinking

some peppermint tea with honey and see if that helps. If it is caffeine, and you

tolerate it- a cup of weak black tea with honey may help.

I didn't eat that much sugar before, and never had caffeine, but YES! I was a total carb addict! Bread, pasta, crackers pretty much ALL DAY LONG.

Thanks so much!

Hi Shaaren!

To PJs point, I think for most people, when they start SCD they have changed

their diet so drastically that their bodies react in different ways- for you it

may be headaches. I had horrible headaches my first few weeks- the combination

of giving up caffeine, eating SO much less sugar and less carbs was tough. I

ended up getting Tylenol compounded, which helped. If it is diet related, rest

assured that you will work through it (hopefully) in the next few weeks.

You'll hear everyone suggesting epsom salt baths a lot- I wish I had discovered

them earlier, but they really are soothing. Whatever is going on in your body,

they can help you detox a little bit. You can buy them at any drug store and

just put a handful in the water (add some baking salt if you feel itchy or dry

from them).

I hope you start to feel better!

Joanna,I just started the diet and my symptoms are worse. I'm also on Prednisone which was going well then I ate something that I shouldn't have and started to taper down. I have had UC for 12 years and in the past I went on a diet like the SCD and it did work (kind of). Now on day two of the diet I'm eating red meat which I never normally eat. Could that be the culprit? Also the grape juice gelitan...had a bad affect on me. Immediate stomach ache so I'm not going to eat that. Please advise me. I'm supposed to go on vacation next Friday. Should I travel or just forget it?Thank youtte Hi Shaaren! To PJs point, I think for most people, when they start SCD they have changed their diet so drastically that their bodies react in different ways- for you it may be headaches. Hi tte!

Welcome to SCD (again :) I'm sorry you have found yourself in this situation- in

a perfect world you'd be doing great and wouldn't have to face the decision of

whether to stick with this or not!

From your post below, I can see that you've already started to figure out some

of this stuff for yourself :) Sometimes it just helps to have someone else

confirm what you are saying (that's why we are here!)

Let's look at it:

1. You ate something you weren't supposed to... not sure what this was, but

technically that means you didn't start the diet until you stopped eating this

food.

2. You are eating red meat- something you knew your body wasn't used to before

the diet (so it probably won't like it much better now either)

3. You reacted to the grape juice gelatin and are going to stop eating it

From the above 3 points, I would say that you should just start with a clean

slate and re-do the intro. Make sure you are ONLY eating the intro foods and try

to eat things that are familiar. So, if your body doesn't like red meat, try

making meat patties from turkey, and so on. Be sure to make the soup and eat the

soup chicken- it is healing and soothing. If you have any questions about the

intro, please ask the group!

NOW... as for vacation... please know that I am NOT a moderator and I am just

giving you my PERSONAL advice (how's that for a disclaimer?!?!). This diet,

while amazing, also takes 100% fanatical adherence. If you think, in any way,

that you are not prepared to take your food with you on vacation and do this the

right way, then I would wait until you get back! But don't give up on SCD. I

think you just need to get off on the right foot.

Another

possibility is dehydration. Make sure you are drinking a lot of fluids,

preferably mostly water, throughout the day. Dehydration can accompany

malnutrition as does die-off and detoxing.

I

get headaches all the time (and frequent migraines). I’ve learned to

recognize all of my particular triggers so can usually do something to lower

the pain to minimal so I don’t need a pain reliever. Most of my headaches

are resolved once I drink or eat, or both.

Thank you for your advice. Can I ask you another question? I started 10 days ago on 20 mg of prednisone. I was feeling great and then on the 7 day I felt so great I ate the chocolate chips scones (I know madness!) then I began to taper down to 15 mg on the prednisone. Immediately I could feel all the food going down and a lot of noise. I stayed on 15 mg for one more day and then realized that I had to go back up to 20 and do the diet. I'm now back on 20 (yesterday and today) but am finding the side effects of the predisone worse than the colitis. I feel drunk and legargic and woozy and sick What I want to do (now that I'm on the diet) is start tapering down tomorrow to 15mg again and if I have problems use Rowasa. I'm also on 6mp and colozal. I know you are not a doctor but I just want your opinion. Also lastly are the side effects of 15mg much better than 20 mg Please tell me yes. Hi tte,

When I was on Prednisone in the past, I could never taper down

quickly or I would become violently ill with stomach flu/whoosy like symptoms –

same as you are describing. To taper slowly, I would do a slow alternate day

taper. For example, take 17.5 mg one day and then 20 mg again the second, then

try the 17.5 mg again. Break the pill in half. Possibly you may need to go

slower. Your body naturally makes the corticosteroid on its own, but when one

is taking Prednisone the body stops making it naturally and needs to restart

itself when you stop taking the medication form.

Good luck,

Thank you for your advice. Can I ask you another question? I

Hi tte,

It was horrible. I would throw up etc. It would happen

unexpectedly and suddenly. Always seem to happen while at work or leaving work.

Once I was on the subway –long story. It happened a couple times in a row

and then I figured out what was going on.

Anyhow, I think you are very similar to me and cannot tolerate

coming off it quickly. I always had to correct my doctors who wanted me off

faster.

You will get off it, but take your time, so you don’t feel

so crappy.

Warm regards,
