Guest guest
When I finally got my braces off after 10 years I had permanent retainers put into my top and bottom teeth. I managed to stay away from the ortho for 10 more years. What a release. This time around I don't know how it will go but it is my guess that your ortho will request to see you maybe 6 months down the line once you get the retainers. And yes, braces truly do suck:-( Sara > How long are we supposed to be going back to the orthodontist after we get > retainers? How long is long enough? Guest guest
Hi I've had the retainers since about 6 months after the surgery. I'm still wearing them as directed. And they ain't bonded retainers. I don't see why I still need to visit with my ortho biannually. Nothing is moving and it's getting to be a pain in the a$$ to make the long trip back to spend like 3 minutes with him. Am I ever going to be free? > When I finally got my braces off after 10 years I had permanent > retainers put into my top and bottom teeth. I managed to stay away > from the ortho for 10 more years. Guest guest
Mmmmm free from the ortho? Now that is a good question. I don't know how long it has been since your surgery but my guess would be that if it's been more than 2 years then you should be ok to say to your ortho " now lookee here sir, it seems to me my visits are now pointless so would you mind giving me a date for say, 5 years down the line? " I think they like to see you semi-regularly after the surgery for at least a year just to make sure your aren't having any relapses or problems. > > When I finally got my braces off after 10 years I had permanent > > retainers put into my top and bottom teeth. Guest guest
It has been about 5 years of semiannual visits. Is it wrong to want to go to annual visits, or better yet NO visits unless I break something? > Mmmmm free from the ortho? Now that is a good question. Guest guest
I might add that I am charged no fees for these visits -- or haven't been, so far. C. > > Mmmmm free from the ortho? Guest guest
Meself, I disagree. Things have a way of slipsliding back into their old patterns. Meself, I don't want ever to need more than retainers again... But I'm resigned to putting up with them until the end of my time. My teeth move quickly without retention. I had some retooling after I fell and broke a front one, and I'm thinking I should have taken the results of the repair back to the ortho; The fillings make the retainers fit a bit differently -- he'd told me to come again annually or after any major work involving crowns or restoration. Other stuff got heavy, and I haven't been back. But I don't wanna lose any of the gains I had while in brackets and wires, nor post op. I'd rather nip it in whatever buds out than go through all that again. Which is why I don't mind going back to the ortho, and will schedule again soon. I've put it off because I think I'm headed for more remodeling of crowns. (ouch!) T'ain't wrong, but what's the big problem about seeing the man and being reassured every six months that all is still well? I wish I had confidence that I could be! C. > > Mmmmm free from the ortho? Guest guest
Am I ever going to be free? Ummmm. Probly not. Sorry. Try wearing this stuff at 13, and doing it again at 56. Better to keep on visiting and not having to do the wires and brackets (and retainers) again... It sucks. But so do lollipops. ;~{<>} C. Guest guest
Lucky you! I am charged a fee. But that's not what irks me. It's the idea of 4 hours on the highway, one way, to spend 3 minutes in the chair, and then another 4 hours on the highway to go home. I'm getting older (hah, yeah, I know I'm still young in some people's eyes) but life is moving on. I cannot guarantee where I'm gonna be living when school is out. I brought the issue up already of going once per year and was told to bring it up at the next visit. I don't want to be basing my career choices on proximity to my orthodontist's office. :/ At this point, I don't know if he is ever gonna lemme go. All my friends finished after 2 years, but they never had their jaw(s) busted. > I might add that I am charged no fees for these visits -- or haven't > been, so far. > > C. > > -
