Thanks for the warm welcome, y'all.

Another note to all you pre-op people. My surgeon for the surgery

was Dr. McColgan at Laparoscopic Bariatric Specialists in

Long Beach, CA. They're totally underrated. I was going to get my

surgery done with Alan Wittgrove, but even with a really good Blue

Cross California PPO, I had to fork out $8K for the surgery, which I

balked at. Dr. McColgan and his colleagues were trained by the folks

down at Alvarado, and they do the surgery exactly the same way, and

they take Blue Cross California. They're also fantastic surgeons,

very friendly, and quite strict about your diet so that you can get

as much success from your surgery as you can possibly manage.

They also have a month-long waitlist. Or at least, they did when I

got the surgery. Alvarado's was longer, Pacific Bariatric was about

8 months, the surgeon at Poway Hospital was really long...these guys

took me right away.

My only complaint is that the hospital, Bellflower Hospital, is kind

of old and shoddy. But I got good care while I was there, so it's

all good.

So for those of you in Southern Cali looking for great surgeons to do

this, check out LBS. I forget the website, but I think if you google

on the name you'll find it...

Good luck!

Welcome to the group. I'm sure you will have a lot to share with us. Be

prepared for lots of questions. This group is a great support system for all of

us. Great job on your weight loss! My husband and I also weight train. My

trainer/friend has competed in Mr. Olympia, etc. I love that stuff. On one of

my many attempts to lose weight I put on a ton of muscle. My husband at one

point got down to about 15% body fat and he is 6'4 " . He's actually bulking up

right now during training. Good luck with the body building, just be careful.

You may want to try the fitness aspect and not actually body building. It's a

bit more healthier. Body builders (whom a know many) destroy their bodies and

are very hard on them...even the " natural " body builders. Just be careful!

Kim,

Thank you so much for being so honest with where you have come from and where

you are going. You are truly an inspiration.

Hi,

I'm new to this group and I thought I'd introduce myself. I had the

surgery done 1/26/04, so today's my seven month anniversary. I

started at 321, I'm at 231 right now, and am aiming to lose around 2-

3 pounds per week and get to around 20% body fat. I had to get the

surgery done for two reasons: 1) because I have a bad hip which

prevented me from exercising beforehand, and I need to get a hip

replacement (I'm young, 29) but they wanted me down to a lower weight

to do this, and 2) because my insulin problems prevented me from

losing weight normally. I'm about 40 pounds within goal weight for

my surgery.

Now that I'm at a lower weight, exercising is much easier. I'm also

taking Celebrex to help me with the pain. Since the surgery I've

also been seriously body building, so that the muscle tissue can

increase my metabolism and weight loss rate. I do have a fair bit of

muscle mass, though, which is keeping my weight up. I'm thinking

that when I get down to my target body fat percentage, I'll start

competing in the natural body building world.

I'm a biochemist, so I know a lot about metabolism, diet and kcal

intake, so hopefully I can help out a lot in this forum!
