Guest guest Posted May 16, 2005 Report Share Posted May 16, 2005 katja, i'm so sorry about the slow process your jaws are taking heal. i had my surgery just over 4 days ago. they are now wired and right now, the 6 weeks they are supposed to be that way seems like galaxies away. it's such s struggle not being able to open my mouth even for the most simple of tasks .... like swallowing water. i had a mandibular osteotomy done (lower jaw) and i'm a little worried that it won't heal quickly enough. the shakes i drink boarder on digusting. it takes in a whole hour to drink a cup of shake and then i need to find somewhere quiet to curl up in to calm my nerves down from all the nastiness. i know i should probably have a more positive outlook on the recovery, but optimism just doesn't want to be apart of my life at the moment. what type of foods are you eating? and how are you getting them down if you can't chew? any salty recipies out there for me to try?

& nbsp;

derrick

& gt;From: katja750 & lt;no_reply & gt;
& gt;Reply-To: orthognathicsurgerysupport
& gt;To: orthognathicsurgerysupport
& gt;Subject: [Orthognathic Surgery Support ] Re: Good Morning...............Hi Again........
& gt;Date: Sun, 15 May 2005 23:36:58 -0000
& gt;
& gt;Hi Bob,
& gt;Good luck with your surgery later this month. It will go tons better
& gt;this second time around. YOu know what to expect and how to handle it
& gt;and everything will fall into place just fine!
& gt;
& gt; I have been having my own fun so you aren't alone. I saw my ortho a
& gt;couple weeks ago and had one band put on one side to restart all my
& gt;ortho work. Well, that started pulling the one side of my upper jaw
& gt;down (It was split to be expanded) and I observed that the upper was
& gt;still loose... hasn't yet healed solidly. The whole upper jaw moves.
& gt;The OS said that was normal and told me to ask ortho about getting a
& gt;band on the other side of my mouth to even out the huge slant to my
& gt;upper teeth. So, orth then added a heavy band to the other side. That
& gt;evened everything out, but I noticed that my upper jaw was super
& gt;loose and practically & quot;wiggly & quot;. If I tried to put my teeth together
& gt;in a bite position, the upper teeth/jaw totally moved. So I called
& gt;the OS. He said all the bands were too soon and that the bone needed
& gt;more time to heal. My clenching and grinding at night definitely
& gt;don't help the cause, but I can't help that at all. So I took all the
& gt;bands off and he put me back on a mush diet. Now that one side that
& gt;was higher than the other seems to no longer be level with out the
& gt;band holding it even with the other side. I guess it will be healing
& gt;that way which I am totally unhappy about. SO! All I can do is hope
& gt;it will finally heal solidly and that the slight angle will be
& gt;corrected with ortho along with everything else ortho has left to do
& gt;to fix my bite. IF NOT, my OS said I will need a second surgery to
& gt;graft bone from my hip to attatch to my very thin and delicate upper
& gt;jaw. I am hoping and praying that it doesn't come to that. Oh, and I
& gt;was supposed to be healed by now... I am going to Russia for a month
& gt;in two weeks... I went to a new PCP last week and he wondered why my
& gt;blood pressure is so high?!!? HA HA And while I'm at it, I had a mole
& gt;removed that was almost considered to be malignant melanoma, so I
& gt;have to have a second procedure and have more tissue around the area
& gt;cut out just to be sure. Sometimes it feels like my body doesn't want
& gt;to be my friend.
& gt;
& gt;So, the point is that I totally commiserate with you. I guess the
& gt;best you can do is get it over with and done and behind you as soon
& gt;as possible.... I log on and don't see many familiar names anymore
& gt;either... but I haven't been on as much myself because I'm so damned
& gt;busy these days trying to get ready for my trip AND go to the OS or
& gt;Ortho every other day it seems....
& gt;
& gt;Take care and I will be thinking about you on the 23rd.
& gt;Katja
& gt;
& gt;
& gt; & gt; I feel a bit like a stranger as I don't see many familiar names on
& gt;here
& gt; & gt; anymore...Just an update,....had my appt. with the surgeon
& gt;yesterday
& gt; & gt; regarding my total relapsed surgery which was performed Mar
& gt;7,.....Not
& gt; & gt; much of an explaination ,he said certainly this kind of thing is
& gt;not
& gt; & gt; anticipated,happens rarely and likely somthin to do with the jaw
& gt; & gt; joint.......So I have a week to try to beef up a bit as he is going
& gt;to
& gt; & gt; re-do it May 23.....I am still pretty much numb lip/chin,...gums
& gt;are
& gt; & gt; just startin to wake up,....and I am still very puffy....I can only
& gt; & gt; imagine what I'm going to look and feel like after I get whacked
& gt; & gt; again.....At work there going to think I will go to anything length
& gt;to
& gt; & gt; get summer holidays ,....anyhow ,I'm just heading to work now to
& gt;break
& gt; & gt; them the news that I going to need another 3 or 4 weeks
& gt;off,....good
& gt; & gt; thing I have a ton of sick days saved up!!......
& gt; & gt;
& gt; & gt; Have a good weekend everyone
& gt; & gt; ttyl
& gt; & gt; Bob
& gt;
& gt;
Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest guest Posted May 16, 2005 Report Share Posted May 16, 2005 Derrick I had the same surgery as you, and I had a hard time drinking at first. I thought that it would be impossible to drink anything thicker than water. When your swelling starts to go down, you will find it much easier to get different liquids down. I actually conquered a Mcs milkshake today. I was pretty excited about that because they are pretty thick. I have 2 more weeks of being wired shut, and the time really does go by faster than you expect. Hang in there, it gets better. )
& gt; & gt; I feel a > bit like a stranger as I don't see many familiar names > on
& gt;here
& gt; & gt; anymore...Just an update,....had my appt. with > the surgeon
& gt;yesterday
& gt; & gt; regarding my total relapsed > surgery which was performed Mar
& gt;7,.....Not
& gt; & gt; much of an > explaination ,he said certainly this kind of thing is
& gt;not
& gt; > & gt; anticipated,happens rarely and likely somthin to do with the > jaw
& gt; & gt; joint.......So I have a week to try to beef up a bit as he > is going
& gt;to
& gt; & gt; re-do it May 23.....I am still pretty much > numb lip/chin,...gums
& gt;are
& gt; & gt; just startin to wake > up,....and I am still very puffy....I can only
& gt; & gt; imagine what I'm > going to look and feel like after I get whacked
& gt; & gt; again.....At > work there going to think I will go to anything length
& gt;to
& gt; > & gt; get summer holidays ,....anyhow ,I'm just heading to work now > to
& gt;break
& gt; & gt; them the news that I going to need another 3 or > 4 weeks
& gt;off,....good
& gt; & gt; thing I have a ton of sick days > saved up!!......
& gt; & gt;
& gt; & gt; Have a good weekend > everyone
& gt; & gt; ttyl
& gt; & gt; Bob
& gt;
& gt;
Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
