Guest guest
Joanne, What was originally the problem with your bite? I played flute as well, and I was talking to a friend of mine (previously my piano instructor in college who also played flute) who suggested that my upper teeth were likely held in check despite my tongue thrust because of the amount of tension the upper lip places on those teeth when playing. Seems pretty logical to me... kind of like a biological retainer! I don't think it will *cause* any kind of relapse, regardless, but it may actually prevent one! As far as the jaw goes, even though you pull your lower jaw back to get sound, I don't think that would affect the permanency of the surgery providing you don't start playing before bones are healed... and even then the problem would be more of the tension straining the bone suture lines rather than the positioning. Guest guest
I have an open bite and an overjet. My tongue also shoots forward to fill in the space when I swallow. Is that " tongue thrust " ? It may have held my upper teeth in check but I don't think anything to help my lower jaw. I also have TMJ and am in for upper/lower surgery in about a year. Two other instrumentalists I went to college with also suffered from TMJ. Acknowledging the risk of relapse if one plays a musical instrument is on the consent form for orthodontic treatment, and I read that very carefully before I signed. My bite has changed so much even these past five months. I can't even get a sound out of it and haven't played since December. > > Hello, I'm new to this group and I'm so glad this group exists. > Quick > > question.
