Diane, Glad to hear all went well at the OD. That's great they estimate

only 12 mos. before surgery and 6 mos. after for the braces. I keep

hoping after my surgery that the time will be shorter than estimated (18

mos post surgery).

Don't want to burst your bubble, but you realize the surgery cost is

probably separate from this? I had quite a rude shock when I realized

how much the surgery was vs. how much insurance paid. I ended up

putting treatment off for a year while I figured out how to pay for it.

Hope it all works out for you!

diane -

i'm glad to hear your braces will be going on soon! i had brackets

attached to two porclein vaneers - they had to use special adhesive

because the first time the brackets popped off. since they were

readhered with the special stuff they've been just fine. if you need

more info feel free to email me in the future.

good luck!

Hi, Luna - Yes, I know that the surgery cost is separate - this post

is only about the orthodontic treatment. I haven't had the

Orthognathic Surgery consult yet - I'll go to my OMS after my OD

discusses his treatment plan. My surgery isn't covered by my

insurance anyway - it's listed in my policy as an " excluded " benefit.

My insurance does pay $1000 (in a lifetime) for ortho. I have a

friend whose daughter had the surgery and the hospital charged her

$7000 and the surgeon's fee was $9000, so I have an idea of the costs

involved.///Diane-- In orthognathicsurgerysupport ,

Diane,

Forgive me as I chime in ... I paid about $6K for my Braces and

another $4K for my palatal expander. I haven't gotten the bill from

the hospital yet (hospital stay, OR, anesthesiologist, etc.) but I

did get the bill from my Surgeon. It was almost $36K. I know the

procedures differ ... and the costs differ more from state to state.

But, wow ... if you're friend's daughter had her surgery for $16K

total - that's AMAZING! :)

Hey, Carol - I forgot to mention that my friend's daughter's hospital

bill was actually less than the $7K because the hospital gives a

discount for paying the total with cash - I think she told me it was

a third off which dropped the hospital bill down to $4500, but I'm

sure the Anesthesiologist bills for their services separately. I

think I mentioned in a previous post that my Surgeon and his

Anesthesiologist/wife have hospital privileges at a small " short-

term " hospital here (small: nine beds) and he told me that the

surgery would be half the price of the hospital that I'm employed at

(due to markedly decreased overhead). My employer's insurance (thru

Blue Cross) excludes Orthognathic Surgery as a benefit so why should

I have my surgery at my hospital? I've worked there for twenty-five

years - too bad they can't reward my longevity and dedication by

making my surgery a covered benefit (I'm frustrated and angry about

this). Sorry to hear that your Surgeon's bill was so expensive. If I

have to have both upper and lower plus lipo, I expect my Surgeon's

bill will be about $15K (that might include the Anesthesiologist fee

because she works for/with him). My OD thinks I will only need the

BSSO, so a BSSO plus lipo might be around $10K. I'll be making an

appointment for my Orthognathic Surgery Consult for late June on

Tuesday. Today I made an appointment for a dental check-up and

cleaning, as I will need this done before I get my braces. Thank you

Carol for your info and continued support. ////// Diane

I can't help feeling bad at the massive costs you people in the states deal

with. I keep reading posts of patients in the states paying over $30k for

an operation. I live in Canada, Ontario to be precise and i didn't pay even

one quarter of what you're paying in Canadian funds. The braces for me was

the most expensive part ringing in at about $6K. The operation was

something like $800, which is the price for my surgeon's services. Because

my procedure was done in a hospital, it was covered by our public health

plan (OHIP). So, after all of it, i barely pay $8000 CAD after factoring

all the other products I have to buy in preparation and during the recovery.

I'm really lucky to be living a Canadian life. anyway. . my 2 cents!

Diane,

It's really a shame that the hospital you work for doesn't have

better benefits for their employees. But it sounds like you've done

your " homework " and are getting all your " ducks in a row " . Good luck

with your upcoming appointments.

Take care!

Derrick,

Yeah, I understand that Canada's policies on Maternity Leave put our

in the US to shame, too. <shrug> Such is life! :)
