Guest guest
Read around in the posts on this site, and on site two, and in Fiddlesticks' geocities site (check the links to find these). There are a number of personal accounts of surgery, including a number of different procedures. Sounds like you're to have upper and lower surgery, with a bone graft, but I don't have any idea what they're advancing and what they're moving back or up or down. You'll want to ask your surgeon whether you'll be wired after surgery, or banded, and whether you'll have a splint or not. He or she should also be willing to explain in more detail exactly what they plan to do, perhaps using a model to show you. Guest guest
Particularly if you're male, you'll also want to ask them whether they've checked to see that you've completed your growth. Some guys, in particular, have the surgery, then have a late growth spurt which undoes the fix, and have to repeat the procedures. That's something I'd want to avoid if possible. Guest guest
I have yet to hear of anybody who isn't afraid of the operation... But try to relax about it all. It is not as big a deal as we think it is, although it is indeed a major operation and you should take it seriously. It requires general anesthesia, which means you turn your breathing over to someone else. The good news about that, though, is that the someone else is an anesthesiologist, who is well-trained, experienced and very careful about what's going on with you the whole time. As for pain, most people do not actually have much pain, and what they do have is well controlled with meds. Many people do have numbness, which can be permanent, or can last a long time. For most, it's also temporary. Ask away, whatever questions you have. Probably someone here will have been through whatever you're facing and can offer support and info. best, Cammie > > > Weeell... > > > > I'm 17 and just got my 4 wisdom teeth pulled (ouch), > > and the next > > step, according to my orthodontist, is surgery to > > correct my > > cross/small underbite. Guest guest
My 17 yr son is having his surgery on Wed 7/20. I promise to post as much information as I can as soon as I'm able! He will have his upper jaw moved forward, and lower moved back. Instead of the genio, with a bone graft, the surgeon has decided to reduce the longer side of his chin by shaving the bone. Although that dosen't sound pleasant, we're glad that there won't be harvest site to deal with too. My best advice: Spend as much time as you can reading through the posts that apply to your procedure(s) and look at the products and food recommendations. Ask questions, gather info and try to get your care-giver involved in this group too. The more you know ahead of time, the *easier* it will be to get through it. Guest guest
No offense, but does your son know and ishe ok with you posting as much info as you can? At 17 I was a really, really private person and would have been angry with my mom had she posted info about me online. Even today I would still be ticked off if she did. :-/ Mia > > > > > Weeell... > > > > > > I'm 17 and just got my 4 wisdom teeth pulled (ouch), > > > and the next > > > step, according to my orthodontist, is surgery to > > > correct my > > > cross/small underbite. Guest guest
No offense taken! Yes, he is really private too, but knows that what I've learned, which will help him, is from this community, and we subscribe to the " pay it forward " motto. He trusts my discretion, and my statement 'as much as possible' means 'as much as HE will *allow*. I'm sure there won't be before and after photos posted... Thanks for the reminder to be careful during this stressful time for him. Guest guest
I'm glad he is ok with it and that you are there to fetch stuff for him during the first couple of days afterwards.
