Hi Guys,

I'm going to a wedding tomorrow. I'm assuming there will be no SCD food, so I'm

bringing my own. My question is, how do I politely and possibly discreetly eat

my own food? I don't even know if we'll know anyone at our table, so I'm feeling

a bit awkward about the whole situation. Any advice on how to handle it?

Thanks!

I just had to do this a few weeks ago.  I have a stylish tote bag that I carried my food in.  The tables had long tableclothes so I was lucky I could just stash the bag under the table.  This wedding was also setup buffet style.  When our table was touched to go to the buffet I got up and went to the ladies room, when i came back my husband made his way back to the table quickly with an extra plate for me and I was able to get my SCD food on the plate before the rest of the table got back.  Not one person asked me about it either.  Everything worked out really well.  I only packed cold items, nothing I had to worry about heating up.  Hope this helps and good luck.

I too just went to a wedding, and like Holly it was buffet style. The caterer was really nice and set aside some lettuce and tomato before he mixed it in with the dressing, I was able to put some boiled egg and avocado I brought on it to make a cobb salad (with a bit of salt for dressing). I had brought some muffins with spinach and pork in them, as well as some cheese and a hamburger patty. None of it had to be heated. Just like Holly, when my table was called I went and got an empty plate and put my food together. I sat down about the same time as everyone else. I did know the people I sat with, so my diet was a topic of conversation, but they knew that before hand so I'm not sure if anyone would have said anything otherwise.

If you could figure out the menu a head of time, you could probably make something really similar to what everyone else is having and no one would be the wiser that your food was special.

Good luck.~

I'm another who had to do this recently for a buffet-style and I just

grabbed a plate and put my cold food on it. I was seated with friends

so it wasn't a big deal, but a friend's date was curious and I said I

was on a special diet for health reasons and it was easiest to bring

my own food. I've attended events where it was full service for the

food and I simply told our table's waiter what I needed (I had checked

out the menu and figured out I could eat the main course without sauce

and just skipped the dessert) and she took care of it. The notion of

being on a special diet is pretty common these days so I don't think

you need to worry about being polite or discreet; its not as though

you're doing something wrong by taking care of your health.

i called way in advance for steak no spices clean grill, steamed spinach and zuc

with no skins sauteed in olive oil - they may be able to do this with no

forewarning??? but at cocktail i just had water and a few nibbles of my food

that i brought in a bag that people thought was a video camera - lol - also

brought my own dessert and extra stuff in case dinner got screwed up - i agree

don't be embarassed just say food allergies and every place is pretty

accomodating and people around you are used to hearing that too - enjoy!

Amber,

It's a sit down dinner?

I went to a retirement dinner last Friday and took Catfish Pecan, a

Caesar Salad, and Pecan Pie. On my own plates and all, in a pair of

insulated bags. I sat down with my bags, and when the waiter came around,

I just said, " I have food allergies, so I brought my own. " He

nodded, and said, " Good! "

I just took out my salad when they brought the salads around, and ate

like everyone else. When they brought the main courses, I slipped my

now-empty salad dish back in the case, and pulled out my plate of fish,

and ate that. Then when they brought dessert, I pulled out the pecan pie.

A couple people were curious, and I just said, " Easier on the staff

if they don't have to keep track of what I can and can't have while

they're trying to get your dinners out. "

No hassles... worked real well!

Thanks for your suggestions, everyone! Next time I'll know to find out in

advance what they're serving so I can make something similar. That's a good

idea.

I don't know why I care so much what other people think. I wouldn't look down on

anyone bringing their own food for health reasons, so I don't know why I think

others will think I'm weird for doing so. Gotta get over that!

I'm hoping I can still make it as I'm in a flare and have a slight fever. I wish

my Crohn's would settle down for good. One of these days!

Take care,

Amber
