Guest guest
Apparantly things have been running too smoothly for me for the past five weeks. Guess my body is in shock. Been having a problem with my hearing and had it tested and the doc was not pleased with the results to say the least. Termed it as sudden onset acute sensory neural hearing loss. Long term for I'm as deaf as a doorknob. He wants to put me on high dose Prednisone for 15 days starting out at 80 mg and tapering down 20 mg every three days. Didn't want to give it to me until I get the go ahead from all my docs. Hematologist said it wouldn't interfere with what he is doing. Cardiologist is out until tomorrow. Gastro doc damn near fell on the floor when he heard the dose and was not happy about it. Said it could be done and that I should take three Nexium a day instead of my normal two while I'm on this stuff. Said he'll keep a close eye on me and we'll get through it. Also, wants me to ask my ENT if I start having problems if there was a possibility of doing a faster taper. Said he didn't want me on it long term and that he would go along with the two weeks. He was cringing when I left the office. I wasn't thrilled with that. Made me very nervous. Has anyone taken Prednisone since wls and if so, for how long, dose and side effects if any from it? Thanks. Guest guest
Regina, Sorry to hear about your hearing loss <slaps self>. I've taken prednisone tapers before and after WLS for asthma without incident or even need for GI drugs. My last taper was a three-week job that started at 120 mg and I don't recall any side effects other than the usual ones for me... Insomnia/too much energy. I was pretty fresh post-op too, three months I believe, and haven't needed any pred in a long time because my asthma's almost a non-issue now. In fact, for the past year, I've gone along without thinking about it and without always knowing exactly where I had an albuterol inhaler stashed on my person. In the past, I would have an asthma attack within 20 minutes of discovering I was without one. I've used that medication since 1984, and never have I used less of it than now! :-) Good luck with the prednisone. It's not all that bad. I don't know everything, but I think your gastro doc might be overreacting, especially since the prednisone is likely to be very helpful with the hearing loss... I would beat my pouch up more than a little bit to have my hearing back, honestly. Guest guest
Geez louise.....don't you feel sometimes like it is NEVER ending? ================ Debbie: All the bloody time. Tim never complains that I don't listen to him, because I've always told him I don't listen to him and trust me, there are certain days when Mozart could hear Leah whining. LOL Just another bump in the road. He's pretty sure I'll get most of my hearing back in my left ear as my last test in December it was pretty much normal. Apparently you have a small window of opportunity to get your hearing back with the steroids. Have had a hearing loss in my right ear since I was a kid and over the past few years it has been getting a bit worse, but there was a big jump in both ears from Dec. until the day before yesterday. That's why he is so concerned. I actually got burned in my lab class today because a girl came up on my right side to ask me to look at glass that we were melting on the bunson burners and I thought she wanted me to take the glass out of her hand to look at her progress and I grabbed it and burned myself. Apparently she didn't ask me to take hold of it, she wanted me to look at it. Have to tell you glass over a flame gets really freaking hot!! Dropped off work at the gastro office I work at and asked one of the docs for a scrip for silvadine to put on the burns. (yes pleural, got burned twice in that class today. OYYY) He started to laugh at that one when I said make it a big jar because I think it's going to be a long semester in the lab. Figure I'll just keep it in my book bag and share it with all the other " rocket scientists " I'm with. Should need another scrip in about a week. Guest guest
Good luck with the prednisone. It's not all that bad. I don't know everything, but I think your gastro doc might be overreacting, ================================================ , Thanks. I started it last night hoping to sleep through any stomach problems and if it makes me stay awake, hopefully it will be during the day when I can use the extra energy, not at 3 am. I don't sleep through the night as it is. I had weight induced asthma and know what you're saying about carrying the Albuterol inhaler around. Last time I had to use an inhaler was two years ago when I had pneumonia. I'm happy for you. The only reason why the gastro doc may be overreacting is that it seems that after so much stuff that has been going on with me, I finally seem to be on an even keel. Blood counts coming up, no more pain, etc. He just hugged me and said we'll get you through this. I'm so drained from all of this, I'm sure these guys are just as frustrated. To top it off, I work for them and we socialize too, so being friends with them, they always go the extra mile to help/protect me. 14 more days of it to go. So far, so good, except that Leah just woke up with pink eye. It that one of the side effects that she may be sympathetically taking for me. Oh brother.
