Guest guest Posted May 23, 2005 Report Share Posted May 23, 2005 Hi , It is perfectly normal to be scared and it can be hard to deal with. I found it helped me that my doctor was very patient and was willing to answer my MANY questions. If there is something that you are wanting to ask and haven't yet - then do it now! I also tried to keep busy and be as prepared as possible by having food in the fridge, videos, etc. I watched a lot of movies before my surgery. And if you are still really stressed you can ask your doc for some mild meds to help you with your anxiety or insomnia. I am 18 months post op, and although there were some rough patches, overall it was not as bad as I expected. Best of luck! > I am 16 years old and will be having surgery June 3. The two things you will hear from most people is that they are hungry and that they want to have the splint taken out. It can be hard to talk, you will be very tired the first week, after that you should be feeling somewhat normal. You will have to remember that you are recovering from surgery and the best thing for you, is to eat, drink lots of water, juice, milk etc and rest as much as possible. The more you do all of these things the sooner you will be back to your old self. Best of luck to you Michele Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest guest Posted May 23, 2005 Report Share Posted May 23, 2005 , I had upper/lower surgery 18 days ago. I had issues with keeping myself calm both pre and post surgery. The best advice I could give you would be to take things one moment at a time. Don't look ahead - when can I go out, when can I eat, when can I talk, when will the swelling go away. Focus on the moment and what you are accomplishing at that very moment. Know that it gets better each day and be proud of yourself for being brave - I'm sure your family is! Aside from the mental ... I'd say read, or watch a good movie, rest when you can and enjoy the fresh air as soon as you're able to. The swelling/brusing is different for each person. A month, a few months, a year ... But from what I've read/heard/learned ... eventually, it all goes away. Breathe ... and accept any support your friends and family offer. And keep up posted on how things go. We'll all be routing for you! Carol > I am 16 years old and will be having surgery June 3. To anyone who has > had the surgery, what are some techniques you used to calm your > nerves? Guest guest Posted May 23, 2005 Report Share Posted May 23, 2005 Hi! Welcome to the June surgery buddy list lol! There are about 5 other people having surgery in June, and I am one! My name is and my surgery is on June 14th. I am having my upper, lower, and chin done to correct an open bite. I am 18 years old (turn 19 the day after surgery! so I am quite close to your age. I have heard that the major swelling and brusing usually lasts up to 2 weeks. Then you should be " normal " enough to go out and start building your strength back up. I cant help you with the nerves because I acutally am not too nervous yet. I am definitely very anxious though. I have been waiting for this day for about a year and a half now! What helps me, since i am very self-conscious about how I look, is thinking about all the days that I am so depressed and hate how I look or dont wanna smile or laugh and then realize that the recovery of surgery must be better than constantly having to worry about how wrong my bite/smile is.(if that makes sense!) What I would suggest is keeping really busy to pass the next few days and eat anything you feel like eating while you can!!!! ~~ Ohh...There is a person on here named Sara that is having surgery June 6th....very close to your date! > I am 16 years old and will be having surgery June 3. Guest guest Posted May 23, 2005 Report Share Posted May 23, 2005 Hi Well it seems that with every day that passes there are more and more of us having surgery in June. I am having surgery on June 6th, is having it on June 14th (June 15th is her birthday) is having it June 28th and there are several other people who are scheduled for end of May/beginning of June and all throughout June. So you see, you will be in good company during the recovery process:-). That's the first thing you should think about. You have a good solid virtual network here for you ready to listen to you whenever you may need to moan or rejoice. In terms of getting over the terrified part I found that it helped to focus on the positive end results that I am looking to achieve with this surgery. For me it was 'bye bye' migraines and jaw popping AND 'hello' biting into a big fat sandwhich without making a mess of myself. I also try to think that the time that will be spent recovering will be only a small portion of my total life and that in the long run the surgery will make the quality of my life better. I am sure that your doctors are very capable and will take excellent care of you. Try to stay calm and keep posting on this message board. I find that the more I talk about it the calmer I feel. Welcome aboard! Sara > I am 16 years old and will be having surgery June 3. To anyone who has > had the surgery, what are some techniques you used to calm your > nerves? Guest guest Posted May 24, 2005 Report Share Posted May 24, 2005 , the night before i couldn't sleep. So, i got up and packed away. The stress will be there, the more you try to avoid it the more you will notice it. For me, i listen to music that i can connect with when i'm stressed. I close my eyes and take deep breaths while focusing on the air that i breath in and release slowly. try it. . practice it and soon you should be able to get yourself away from those busy stressful frames of mind.

& nbsp;

derrick

& gt;From: & quot;R & quot; & lt;smartblonde114@... & gt;
& gt;Reply-To: orthognathicsurgerysupport
& gt;To: orthognathicsurgerysupport
& gt;Subject: [Orthognathic Surgery Support ] surgery 6/3
& gt;Date: Mon, 23 May 2005 22:43:55 -0000
& gt;
& gt;I am 16 years old and will be having surgery June 3.
