Guest guest
I had the lower jaw surgery in late December and I still do not have all the feeling in my lower jaw and lower lip. My surgeon stated that it could take up to one year for all the feeling to come back. I had absolutely no feeling for three months. Now everything tingles when I drink liquids and tingles on the outside when I tough my lower chin and lip. I have been told this is very good and is a sign of healing. moranbe wrote:Hi, I had lower jaw sugery 6 weeks ago and still have very little feeling in my chin and my lower lip has a burning sensation. I don't think it's getting any better but my OS says the feeling will come back over time. My chin is very " tight and uncomfortable " and I'm starting to panic. Has anyone been through this?? Guest guest
I think the burning sensation is a GOOD thing! I think it means stuff is coming back. I am numb but have a slight burning sensation, too, which makes me hopeful. I have been wondering, does anyone know if there's anything that can be done to encourage nerve regeneration/healing? Guest guest
I have read that B complex vitamins are good for nerve tissue--so am giving it a try. I'll try just about anything at this point > I think the burning sensation is a GOOD thing! I think it means stuff > is coming back. Guest guest
I can tell you that my neurologist encourages me to eat deepwater fish - - salmon, oysters, etc., three times a week, to get the fish oils. (Sardines, I think, too, although I'm reluctant to do those for fear of offending other folks' noses!). She also encourages taking plenty of B vitamins. > I think the burning sensation is a GOOD thing! I think it means stuff > is coming back. Guest guest
Thanks for responding...it is encouraging to hear that I am not the only one going through this. Everyone looks at me and thinks I'm doing great but I don't know if I'll ever get used to the reconfiguration in my mouth...and if I bite my lip one more time I'm going to drive into a brick wall! Guest guest
MLD massages have helped me with my nerve regeneration, particularly in my chin. I don't think MLD is specifically meant to regenerate nerves but I've noticed that after each one of my massage sessions I get a tingling feeling and inevitably some of the numbness goes away. Guest guest
OK, B vitamins and fish! I can do that. I already take a multi -- wonder if that's enough? And I ate lots of fish in Seattle and then had salmon cakes last night. But three times a week, that'll give me an excuse to go have fried oysters more often, yay! :-) L
Guest guest
Not to discourage anyone, but ... today a coworker told me that her husband -- who had upper and lower several years ago -- still can't feel part of his lower lip and chin. She said she has to tell him when he has food on his face. Dang. I need a wife. (Kidding!) L
Guest guest
I'm still using my little roller-ball massager every day ... gently. It feels good. Hopefully it has some therapeutic effects, too. L
Guest guest
I thought that was a pretty nifty prescription... Although I immediately asked whether she'd be willing to prescribe some Dom Perignon for me, to go with the lobster! (No such luck. Sigh.) C. > OK, B vitamins and fish! I can do that. Guest guest
My husband and I have worked out hand signals. Whenever we're out in public and I have something stuck to my chin, he touches his nose (and usually laughs, too but that's beside the point). I still have numbness on my chin and the left side of my lower lip almost three years after my lower jaw advancement. I've been told it's probably permanent because of how much my jaw was advanced (17 mm). > Not to discourage anyone, but ... today a coworker told me that her > husband -- who had upper and lower several years ago -- still can't > feel part of his lower lip and chin. Guest guest
Definitely, massage will help get the swelling down quicker, too. My physical therapist told me to massage my face at least five times a day. It does seem to help. > I'm still using my little roller-ball massager every day ... gently. > It feels good. Guest guest
You are sure welcome! I have been very concerned about the very same issue. moranbe wrote:Thanks for responding...it is encouraging to hear that I am not the only one going through this. Guest guest
My surgeon mentioned that there have been cases where the feeling does not come back, but that this is very rare. There's hope!! str8teeth4me <no_reply > wrote:Not to discourage anyone, but ... today a coworker told me that her husband -- who had upper and lower several years ago -- still can't feel part of his lower lip and chin. Guest guest
Dang, it coulda been tax-deductible with that prescription! :-# L > > OK, B vitamins and fish! I can do that. Guest guest
Wow, five times a day! Good to know. I'd worried my once a day was overdoing it, but thought I'd trust how it felt (good!) over my fears. L > > I'm still using my little roller-ball massager every day ... gently. > > It feels good. Guest guest
Uh Oh... I have met your Beau, and I fear his hand signals... Reminds me of Fiddly's spouse, who, when she asked him whether anything unfortunate lingered in her braces, characteristically responded, " Not so's you'd notice. " Trust one of the kidlets, instead! Or I'll send you a pocket mirror, if you like... Coming back this way anytime soon? Crab soup is still waiting for you and Caboose... Maybe all three of us at once! Guest guest
Yum! Sounds really good. No, unfortunately, I won't be able to come down to Alabama anytime soon. I have to go to PT three times a week for the next six weeks and then will be starting kindergarten. Sigh, my baby is going to school. I can still dream of that crab soup. > > My husband and I have worked out hand signals.
