Hi Matt,

I'm 18 and I just had lower jaw surgery on 7/6 which is probably a

little less major but anyways about eating...I am really thin - 5'6

104lbs and so I've been working really hard and drinking lots of

ensure and protein shakes and stuff so I've managed to keep my weight

around 101 or so, so basically I lost about 3lbs. So I guess if you

wanna lose weight you can, but if you work at it you can stay the same

weight as you are now. Hope this helps! =)

Hey Matt, Im Kathy and Im 16. I had upper and lower surgery about 3

and a half weeks ago and I am totally eating normally now. I mean no

crunchy foods or tough foods like pizza but I can eat all pastas and

what not and pretty much anything else if its chopped up small but

thats only because i cant open my mouth so wide. I was 110lbs before

surgery and in the beginning I tried to do all that ensure stuff but

it didnt work out, at my worst I wass 100 lbs but now Im like 104. You

put the weight back on fast enough. I would say 3 weeks the diet will

be normal and you will be feeling great!

Ha. I wouldn't have minded losing a few pounds -- but I doubt I have.

I thought it was funny that the handout I got said, " Most patients

return to a normal appetite within 5-6 days. " I never LOST my

appetite. Well, maybe for a few hours. But by the evening of surgery,

I was like, OK, I'm ready for more than broth and juice. I guess some

of us are just blessed with famine resistance! ;-) L

I was definitely designed, genetically, to live in sub-Saharan Africa,

although I admit I couldn't possibly generate the energy to forage and

harvest there...

If you are concerned about losing weight I would try something like

Hey there,

I had surgery July 22 and I had both the stomach tube and the

breathing tube...I don't really remember them taking out the breathing

tube but I definitely remember the stomach tube part. I hated it. I

think part of it was because I had went camping the weekend before and

my allergies had been acting up which had caused my tonsils to swell

up so it would rub against them when I swallowed and that was

definitely not fun. But it did indeed help me to not get sick from

the blood in my stomach and such. My OS came in a couple times and

flushed my stomach out through it and them removed it the following

morning much to my relief. My throat was kinda sore for a day or two

and that side of my nose bleed a little but it really wasn't that bad.

Definitely worth having to avoid throwing up blood. Hope this

helped some! --

I don't mean this to be silly.

I would guess that like me, you don't have to worry about osteoporosis!

My bones are off the charts for density, and that is, as Martha says, a

Good Thing.

Sorry you had such a long time under, though. Be ready to deal with

aftereffects, which can be unpleasant (depression, feeling weary, etc.)

but usually aren't dangerous.
