Certainly continue to eat animal protein -- it keeps your pouch full. But it

can't supply all your protein needs if you have the typical RNY.

Protein shakes don't necessarily fill you up unless you're newly post-op.

What they do is satisfy your body's cravings for nutrition. Of course a

little chocolate works, because it releases seratonin into your system and

makes you " happy. " But it also causes blood insulin spikes and drops, which

will eventually work against you if you are insulin resistant, causing you

to hunger for more food -- not real hunger, but hunger brought on by the

body's need to normalize the insulin balance.

Protein shakes keep you nourished, so your body doesn't constantly look for

something to fill its needs. You can, of course, make them thicker so they

will stay in your pouch longer, but if you drink them thin, they work just

as well, because the protein is getting absorbed into your system further on

down the digestive tract.

I never expect my shakes to make me feel " full, " but they do keep me

" satisfied, " in that when I use them, I don't go grazing for more food or go

on a carb-fest that never seems to end.

Hope that helps ~~ Lyn

Early on protein drinks satisfied me quite well. Now I use them

primarily for breakfast if I'm in a rush or if I am hungry late at night

(after 8pm) instead of grabbing something that is going to sit there. I

have also discovered that if I am truly craving something sweet, a good

old chocolate protein drink or a vanilla protein drink with mixed berries

satisfies that urge.
